Mxl 960 just blew up. HAPPY ENDING !

EDIT - read below, but know that MXL have stepped up today in a big way and replaced the 960 with a Genesis, set up repair of my preamp with Summit and are gtting me a new soundcard. MXL's customer service has made me a very happy guy today!

-------------------------------------------------------------

I just received it in the mail. I hooked it up according to directions, i turned it on, heard scratchy noises and thought that was just the tube getting warm. Then I start to smell plastic. then i see smoke from the mic, my summit2ba preamp (which was turned all the way down, phantom off) and my m-Audio omnistudio soundcard.

Mic dead
Summit dead
soundcard dead.

Called MXL - they're in a christmas party and no one wants to get on the phone til monday. I look at their warranty - it only covers the unit and no ancillary damage.

So unless MXL sets up, I'm out a soundcard AND the Summit preamp. And no, I don't have the money to replace them.

THIS SUCKS.

I WILL NOT BUY MXL AGAIN.

Anyone have suggestions on what to do?

Thanks,

Stuart

That sucks...Id play it up to the insurance company...pad all you can...what is your deductable?

.. well my personal suggestion would be.... go to the nearest home depot, get yourself some rope and a small chair (cheapest one you can find). make your way back home and i trust you know what follows..

good luck man...

Im with Chickenmaster , but take it one step further , get a gun and take hostages and kill one person every hour till your demands are met !!!

Basicly you are shit out of luck with your equipment accept they will probably fix or replace the MXL .....

I don"t see how electricly the MXL could take out you Summit and your sound card , The summit most likely have an input transformer which should block any DC from getting from the mic to the preamp circuitry , and even if it did it shouldn"t get to the output of the Summit , and allmost every sound card should have input caps that would block DC , if it didn"t they would blow but should still stop the DC from entering the Sound cards circuitry ...... So take a look inside your summit and your sound card and see if there are any visibly fried components .....

well good luck

A dead short from one of the pins and ground of the MXL could do it...I wonder if he can still get a dynamic to work with the summit...and even that could be a fuse if he is lucky.

the summit's D.I. works with a dynamic still, but the mic channel is fried. I took the cover off of the summit but I can't find a fuse and I can't see anything that looks fried.

of the stupid things ive heard said on thid BBS, that ranks up there..

What???you own an insurance company now
His claim is Legit...but I just know that his company will jack with him like they all do...you make premiums every month and the payout ends up being less than the deductable...Im just saying that he should give them values based on the BS list prices the stores all give to eat up that deductable.

What you need to do is take a volt meter and test across componants to find where alot of the voltage drops....then unplug to see if there is an open across that componant...then replace it.

companies drop you for making too many claims..a few months down the line he may have a legit claim and they either drop ya or jack up the premium...

and for what?..to come out of this with a few hundred bucks?..

thanks, but i'm not good with testing equipment - just wanna plug in and play! plus all I want is to get my equpiment back to the way it was BEFORE plugging this thing in - I'm not looking to profit off of this.

Im just keeping them from putting the screws to you...those insurance companies would as soon let you die before paying a claim...dont feel bad if you pad things a little to eat your deductable...god knows in the end they will raise your premium anyway...you might as well get the service that you pay for.

anyway one of the solder joints in your preamp could have been iffy?
If the solder on your positive pins come off you won't get any sound which could explain your preamp not working.
I don't know about the mic though
