participant, thanks for the feedback. in terms of low-mids, after thinking about it i realized that while i did rolloff the bass on most non-bass tracks i realized that the analog channel i have on the mix bus has a bass bump around 150 hz...
i agree on adding some background vocals and can hear where it woudl fit in for a lot of my material actually...something i'll have to work in gradually over time
the wocka wocka sound was just fingerboard muting with a wah on it. i added it underneath the guitar parts as a percussive to give the guitars more drive/definition.
one Motown/70s trick i want to try for an overall mix is adding a cowbell track playing quarter notes on the downbeat and then nudging them so it leads the beat slightly. then bring the level down until it's just a smidgen below audible...something i learned about recently which is supposed to work to give a song more oomph...
