As the title sayes ...

Got my MOTU MTP AV hooked up to my PC at last , got all my gear plugged into it and i can record midi and playback midi from sonar to any of my gear ....

... however , been trying to use the internal clock of sonar 4 to provide mtc to sync up the timing on all my gear and the gear doesnt get the code .

I have set sonar to broadcast MTC code but it seems to not get relayed by the MTP AV.

I use clockworks for programming the MTP AV and have patched MTC to all midi outputs but ill be damned if i can get it to work.

The motu unit has 2 midi ports in the front and i tried hooking up a midi out from my soundblaster card to the midi in on the motu front panel and this got the MTC code out to the gear but it gave spurious results.

Anyone shine some light on this please ?

and thanks

the clock of all my synths. I have them all set to external clock

Hmmmmm, why would you want to do that? I don't. Are you running their sequencers?

MTC is not the same thing as midi clock and was generally used for tape sync and being able to move play position around in an externally syncd recorder. U should not need to send anything other than note info unless u are using internal sequencers, then u need just to send clock (not mtc). Make sure that you are not filtering system common msgs (like start/stop)

Agreed, that was what I weas getting at.

Look, Cortexx, contact me and I'll help you get your studio talking amongst itself....

Heya guys.

MTC (midi time code) i thought was the clock that sonar was transmitting to sync everything together.

if i have my keyboard plugged directly into my computers midi interface it works great for syncing arps and sequencers etc , when it has to go through the MOTU it all goes to hell and the gear doesnt get the midi clock signal.

I though MMC was what was used to control tapes dats and other equipment.

I have the right idea just may have got the terminology wrong ;)

OK, if you want to sync EXTERNAL arpeggiators and sequencers, that's another thing. But you DON'T need it just to send note information,, patch changes, etc to your keyboards.

You are right in that MMC is for external tape decks , recording devices, lights, etc. MTC is a alternative ot midi clock, but they are NOT the same thing.

So, you need to transmit midi timecode to sync the sequencer in your keyboard/module to your software sequencer, or to REALLY want to sync your arpeggiator.

Again, what exactly is it that you are trying to sync? Knowing that is the only way we will be able to help you, I think.

ok i have a pc with sonar 4 home studio.

i have a MOTU MTP AV with the following equipment plugged into it from the MOTU midi outputs to the rack inputs :-

Emu proteus 2000, xtreme lead xl-1, orbit 9090
Roland JP8080, Access virus B

MOTU midi outputs to V-synth & korg MS2000B inputs , V-synth & korg MS2000B outputs to MOTU inputs.

Also use the following :-

Novation station x25 plugged into USB for midi

Roland Vario-OS plugged into USB for midi

I can play a piece on any keyboard and record the midi in sonar and play it back but i cant sync the arps and sequencers on the synths with sonars midi sync .

If i plug the v-synth directly into the computers sb4 audigy midi port it works , through the motu it wont .

I dont understand why it wont work , I have the factory settings reloaded on the MOTU and from what i can gather this is all i need to do.

The MOTU is connected to my PC through the parallel port with a data cable.

What are the sync options for sonar that you see (I dont use it)??

sonar just has an icon to hit if you want it to broadcast the midi clock to your external equipment. That is enabled and works directly to instument but not through the MOTU

And you have enabled that route from the computer to the midi output in question (from Clockworks?)

And which do you want to use? MTC is NOT the same thing as midi clock.

The motu ports should appear in Sonar just like any other midi device. The patch functions on the AV should just be empty (no patching)

I think he has to patch MTC through to the exact port he wants to use. I am not at home, and this is from memory, but if I recall correctly, by default it gets patched through to port 7.

Midi clock, on the other hand, gets propogated to all channels as it is inherent to the midi protocol. MTC is a sub-protocol and not necessarily propogated.

Again, this is all as best I recollect, I will verify when I get home.

OK guys after about another 3 hours of general jerking around, swearing and copious cups of coffee , it turns out that sonar needs the midi sync to be manually patched under "options/program" to the ports you want it to broadcast to.

That explains why it would work with the sb audigy 4 pro midi port but not any of the motu ones. I have to patch each port individually in this location for each of my projects. The SB card was the only (default) patch that is patched with midi clock signal automatically on each new project.

Thanks for the help guys its all working really nice now :D
