No offense Cyan but I wouldnt use your friends music as evidence of the superiority or even functionality of mixing through headphones. The 2 songs I heard were very campy in writing and tone quality.

All canned sounds to boot!!!

I cannot recommend headphones for mixing at all! No matter the quality, it will not translate with "real" sounds. For checking for noise, and possible "exact" stereo placement, yes. MAYBE for SOME tonal adjustments, sure. But overall, two thumbs down.

Campy! Ha! That is a word I haven't heard for awhile. Great descriptive though. Fucking canned sounds......Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

i have a question. if i am mixing down to my home stereo system, and i am using my bookshelf speakers as monitors, can i cut the high and low end on the eq to help compensate for the speakers? sorry if this was already posted.

Pros of Monitors :
- much faster to get the sound you want on all systems
- easy on the ears

Cons of Monitors :
- cost a few bucks more

Right?

I guess the question is - how much are you worth? Is it worth your time spending an extra 6 or 8 hours on every mix because you have to keep burning CDs and trying them on different systems? For the price of my YSM-1s (<$200 US) I save quite a bit of time when doing mixes and when reviewing sounds, etc. That was well worth it to me - I do this as a hobby and it has to fit in among my paying jobs. The monitors make it much easier to fit it in....

Goodness Cathy, thats alot of hostility All we're doing is taking you to task for some clearly amateur and inexperienced notions that you have about recording. I think just about everyone here has mixed at least once (if not several times) on home speakers and can attest to the fact that you WILL not get accurate translatable mixes that way.. without endless back and forth referencing to other systems and even then its a dubious bet. There is clearly nothing like the clarity of decent moitors. Maybe home speakers work for you and if they do... post a clip of your work....please, baby...I promise Ill give it a fair trial. I for one am in agreement with you that there are instances where you can get great sound on cheap gear.. and there is no question that 85% of production is in the quality of the engineer not the gear. So lets hear what home speakers can do.

Per definition, if you can consistently make good recordings on it is not "sub-par".
So, sorry, despite all that anger, you are STILL totally wrong. It might be that you are trying to say something else. Maybe you are trying to say that you can make good recordings on CHEAP equipment. That is completely true. But although that might be what you want to say, you are saying something else.

(Of course, this largely depends on what you mean with "good" and "cheap", but thats another discussion.)
