I'm using Event TR8 near field monitors with a KRK 10' sub. The Events frequency response is: 35Hz – 20kHz, ±3dB, Ref 500H

Does that mean I need to set my sub crossover freq selector to 35Hz?

Thanks!!!!

I usually try around 80hz, it depends on the full range monitors low reproduction. The reason it is not 35hz is that there is a roll off on the main monitors where you get less volume as you dip into the sub range therefore there won't be much volume at 35hz even though the speakers can still produce it. You set the crossover hz to pick it up around the same time that the lows in the mains drops off.

Heck, sweep that frequency around and try it at various positions. Unless you're running the speakers up near their limits it won't hurt anything to experiment with different settings. Most likely the best setting will be around 100Hz. I tend to use higher values for smaller woofers, but that may be my live sound habits intruding into the studio. Given the control room environment it's possible 80Hz will be closer to the ideal. If the sub has a polarity switch try that too.

If you go too high it becomes easier to hear the sub as a separate source, and it's harder to time align the sub and tops (which you probably won't need to do). If you go too low then the main speakers carry too much of the LF burden and you lose some of the benefits of using a sub.

As the TR8 has an 8" bass speaker anyway I thought that a starting point of 80hz would work, if the setting can go lower I would even try 60hz. In fact you may not need the sub at all, but start at 80hz and play with the phase and sub volume. It takes a while to get it set up and get used to it.

I find that once you get to 100 hz it starts to influence the sound too much, I would only go 100hz and above if the mains have small bass drivers.

I use the KRK 10s sub with KRK RP6 mains. KRK recommended crossover in this configuration was 80hz.

Also, you really need to balance your levels between sub and main, and KRK has a detailed process for that (see the docs for the KRK speakers). That 10s sub is very powerful compared to my RP6s, and it is very easy to have them unbalanced. To get balanced per KRK recommendations, I ended up with the mains at 75% volume and the sub at something like 25% volume. Presumably this balancing would be easier with Event TR8s.
