anybody know if there is such a mic?
im thinking it would plug into one of the xlr inputs and bend toward the engineer so he can talkback to the person being recorded.
my mackie 1604 doesnt come with one preinstalled.
anyone have ideas on this?

Yes there is. I bought mine at Rat Shack. It's a dynamic head on a piece of flex with an XLR on the other end. My mixer has a dedicated talkback mic input but it could be plugged directly into a mic channel of any board as long as the mic connectors on the mixer are on the top of the mixer.

or even just a normal mic put on a bass drum mic stand (the short, stable one)..if you have room to put the stand next to your board...:)

It was $60 and the model number 33-3011. It was an announce mic like they use at fast food restaraunts. It's fantastic as a talkback mic.

So, how do those work?
Do you have some sort of PA in the tracking room, or do you route the mic's output to a headphone distribution amp?

Yeah. It routes to the headphone mix. It makes communications a hell of a lot easier than sign language through the glass.:DOn my console the talkback mic has a spring loaded deadman switch that has to have finger on it to talk. As soon as you take your finger off, it's off.
