The mixes are coming. 
Chessrock - pretty cool. I see you took the producer road. I liked what you did at the end with the pasted in vocals - low fi and all. That was nice. The slowdown was insane. What plug did you use for the slow-down? Is it tapestop, or something different?
Christian - I'll comment on yours tomorrow.

Listening on headphones at the office now.
Cary: Just one thing that struck me: Imho the vocals are too low, especially compared to the acoustic guitars. But you'll probably say the opposite about my mix.
Chessrock: Has to wait until to night I'm afraid. Issues with downloading from NWR here at work. Could be a firewall thingy, I dunno.
Christiaan: Your mix, especially the drums sound too reverby this morning.

Yeah I think he took it down. Either that, or someone dragged the file out of the window into their computer instead of copying it and pasting...I'm not sure if ftp works this way or not.

Yeah Fenix, someone must have done just what you said. I feel if Ron needed to shut the FTP site down, he would have changed the user and password. I was able to upload to the site no problem.
Too bad I don't have the zip file here at work or I would have beed able to restore the file. It will have to wait until I get home tonight.

Hi. I’m still fairly new around here and a journeyman mixer at best, but thanks for the opportunity to take a stab at mixing some high quality tracks. You may never hear my result, because this thread will probably be long gone and forgotten by the time I finish my mix, but this will be a good learning experience to help me come to grips with my all-digital system (Cool Edit Pro older version, waves plug-ins, Alesis Monitor Ones).
My first step was to take the raw tracks and play with the volumes a bit to see what was there. Nice song. First, let me congratulate you on an excellent tracking job. There is nothing I perceive that needs to be “fixed” if you know what I mean. The acoustic guitar was especially well recorded and cleanly played. I compressed it a bit, boosted the upper frequencies slightly and added a bit of reverb and it is indeed sweet.
I was particularly interested in the drum tracks, because my band is going to record a demo at my house and I’m faced with recording drums for the first time. The kick drum sets off one of the toms, but this gets lost in the mix. I probably would have driven myself nuts trying to fix that unnecessarily. Lesson learned. Sorry, but I hate the snare sound. Too much like a field marching drum for my taste and there doesn’t seem to be much I can do to fatten it up. I added a bunch (probably too much) reverb to it. After listening a few times I think I’m starting to get used to it in a Police kind of way.
The other curiosity is the almost shouted section in the last verse. Comes from out of nowhere. Punched in? I reduced the volume on this section a bunch BEFORE I compressed and then some more after. I need more work here.
Overall, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of stuff in the higher frequencies and I find myself searching for places to bring that out more (maybe it’s my old ears that have lost all the high frequency response). The more I mess with this, the more I hear The Police….I think it’s the field drum snare and muted guitar stuff. Did you intend that influence?

This was the first time I had used the Presonus M80. It had gotten some pretty good reviews. Everything, except the bass guitar, was tracked through the M80. After tracking everything I realized this preamp SUCKS. It has absolutely no high end definition on it, relatively speaking. I think it sells for around $2000? You would think it would be a decent 8 channel preamp, but no, it's not.
I own a presonus Digimax LT 8 channel preamp and it kicks some serious ass compared to the M80...and it's $1000 less.

i make ambient/noise so i'm not used to mixing music
anyhow i've done my best and ended up with only using 11 tracks (doubling vocals and guitar) i spent a coupke of hours on it so there's propably a lot left to improve
btw i've done something with the vocals some of you might not like ?!

apparently there's a weird ducking effect that doesn't show up in wave.

That's a great effect.
I just ran it through a BBE Sonic maximizer, and then out to a set of NS-10 reference monitors with the treble jacked all the way to 11.
Very soothing.
