FYI if you all are wondering why most of the tracks were tracked relatively low gain, this is the good ole presonus m80. This is another reason the m80 sucks. 0 db (unity) on the presonus is not 0db in protools. +6 on the m80 isn't even 0db. Clipping on the m80 isn't 0 db in protools. I thought maybe it was a calibration thing but it wasn't. The PT interface is even set at +4db (as opposed to -10db). With other pre's I don't have a problem.
Do not consider buying a presonus m80.

Nice mix. IMO I thought the hard panned acoustic guitar was a bit annoying. The vocals are a little on the dry side. Get some verb on them. The kick could be punchier. What do you have the attack set at on the kick compressor? Also, try and get some more attack on your snare. I know it's not the best sounding snare track but IMO the best sounding snares have been from chessrock and myself. The cymbals could be brought up a touch too and hard panned if they're not already.

Thanks for the response fenix. Of course, now I have more questions. First of all, I should probably read a few threads on compression and I'll do that, but to answer your question, my attack time was set at .5ms. I gotta admit, I don't hear much difference as I move this around. I used about 2:1 compression. Is this appropriate? What is a "good" attack level?
Re the panned acoustic: I wondered how this would sit, because it is off-balance in the beginning with vocal on center and acoustic panned about 25% right, moving to 100% right when the rest of the instrumentation comes in. Obviously it didn't sit too well ;-)
Re the vocal: Yep, bone dry. All I did was compress and tweak the EQ a bit. Initially, with all the verb I put on the snare (wrong direction if I want attack eh?) I was afraid putting some on the vocal would overdo it. After awhile I got to kinda like the vocal dry. I gotta admit, I like the amount of verb on your mix though.
Re cymbals: Already hard left & right, but it wouldn't hurt to bring them up a bit methinks.

OK, did a bit of research....it looks like to punch things up a bit the attack needs to be more on the order of 5 or 6ms, not .5ms where my default was set. I guess you CAN teach an old dawg new tricks!

try 30-38ms on the attack setting with a slightly higher ratio, say 4:1 or 6:1 on the snare and kick and you should have some decent results.

By the way, I inadvertently lied. The panning I did on the acoustic was 50% right throughout except for the last chord that was put on-center. I know that doesn't make you like it any better, just wanna set the record straight

Vox - sorry I didn't comment sooner on your mix. Here's what I heard.
Intro - I think the balance between the guitar and the vocal is a bit off. Perhaps having the acoustic a bit louder there would make things better. Vocals are dry. That's not bad by definition, just sounds a little naked with just the acoustic guitar.
When the drums come in, they are over powering the rest of the band. There's something off in that drum fill at 0:35. If you were getting paid to mix this, this may have been an area where you would do a little fixing. In this case, it happens to be the kick drum coming in too early for the last two hits of the fill. Take a look at how the kick is not synced to the beginning of the bass guitar part. Did you use some sort of plug-in on the bass? I hear something like distortion??? I like how you split the vocals at 1:02. Nice.
The rest of the song seems pretty cool. You took out that last guitar line. Again, in the real world scenario of mixing for a client, you may have upset the guitarist. Perhaps you could have taken the guitar track and sent it out through a miced amp to re-record it and fatten it up. You could also try a plug like Amplitude. Take a listen to my mix and see if you think the guitar line sounds any fatter than the original. I'm surprised nobody picked up on that.

I've listened to all the mixes at least 10 times each in the last few days,and IMHO caryindy posted the best mix hands down,and I posted the worse 20 minute mix on record.
None of the mixes sounded "mastered" compared to commercial CD's.
Did any of you guys A/B with a commercial CD for comparison?

my $.02... none of the mixes have yet to improve on the original, imo. This is a great experiment and learning experience however. I am just a little supprised that no ones mix really improved what was already there.
I tried to d/l the tracks to join in on the "contest" but for some reason it would have taken a couple hours to download the files in zip format. Is that what everyone else had to do?
