Mic Positioning?

This if for Hip-Hop vocals by the way. I always here "Never rap directly into the microphone" and "Point the head of the microphone between your chin and your shoulders" Is all of that true? I was recording some stuff earlier and was recording directly into the diaphram and my vocals came out real muddy and bassy, then adjusted it to where it points to my neck and it sound real clean.

Is there a rule to this? or whatever sounds good?

it got deep and muddy because of a think called the proximity effect (nice bit of theory for you
