I have a pair of NT1s, and am about to spring for something a bit better. I've investigated a number of AT40XX and AKG mics. I'd like to have a switchable polar pattern that has a hyper-cardiod setting. For this reason, the AKG C4000b looks pretty good. Another contender is the AKG C414ULS.
Then there's the AT 4033 which is much less expensive, and the AT4060 which is supposed to sound very nice, but neither of these have switchable patterns. Any comments, any advice?

i have been having the same dilemma
seems about a toss up b/t at 4050 and ksm44
both have similar specs,patterns,etc

anyone compared these 2 mics?

mostly recording vocals,electric guitars,some drums

ksm-44

I think the ksm-44 has a mush fuller sound than the at4050. When I listened to the at, it just sounded really harsh on the highs. It may be good for someone who has a deep voice who's trying to bring out the highs in their voice.

BTW - I love the ksm-44 on EVERYTHING - especially on vocals, overheads, and acoustic guitar.

I'm with FBstdminime on this as far as vocal applications are concerned, but the 414 for me has shown more flexibility over many different applications...inst miking, vocals, cabinets, etc. Personally, I would go for the AKG414. You're not gonna lose either way!

Personally if it is for a number of applications I would use maybe the KSM or TLM103 and save the extra for a pair of
small condensers like the Rode NT3.
