So I caught a documentary on MTV last night about Metallica. While they were in the studio, James was singing thru a huge honkin' mic that looked like it had a large black sponge cover.

Anyway, we was screaming/singing directly into the mic while holding it (no stand or pop filter). His lips were pressed up against it...and yet I didn't hear any pops. What the heck was he doing? Is this normal for metal vocals?

The mic you are talking about is a shure sm-7. It's a dynamic mic so no need to shock mount or anything. A lot of people favor this mic for heavier rock vocals and it seems they use it on a lot of females also (Robbin from Howard Stern uses one)

Thanks gents...that's exactly what I was wondering.
