Binding The Fretboard

Stuck the binding on with Weld-On #16:

Cleaned up the fret slots before totally set. About 15 minutes:

Sanded back the top edge of the binding. Also started shaping the nut:

Now started test staining and finishing on scrap. Pics to follow.
 
Fretting

I cut each fret to length and (again) trimmed ends where they overlap the binding.

Prebent them and pressed them in. Trimmed to length. Used a Stewmac fret bevelling file and then their end round file. Bevel until you just leave a line in the masking tape:

Used a straight edge to check their heights:

Best fretting job I have done to date. Worth having the tools.
 
Staining and Finishing

My son has been test staining and I am now happy with the mix.

First is a Walnut pore filler, sanded back with 2000 grit, followed by 2 tint coats of cedar and jarrah tints in a mix of 20:2:5:5 nitro:thinner:cedar:jarrah. Like this so I am going with it:

Polished with car paint swirl remover:

Now there will be 6 clear coats of nitro.

Started the guitar with Walnut pore filler after sanding to 400 grit:

Here's a lil tip on hanging the guitar... I use a very small eye hook screwed in where the strap button goes on the bottom of the body. I found it works better than hanging it from a tuner hole. I've had it cause damage to the headstock before.:)

Good Point....

Anyway I started standing back the pore filler and found that the truss rod slot was nearly coming through the back of the neck. Paper thin. I tried to use filler, but it would look crap:

Lots of double sided tape and set up to route a straight line to put in a 'skunk stripe':

Cut a rosewood strip off a fingerboard blank (still enough left to use!) and rounded ends and another 'feature' :rolleyes:

First Tint Coat

Sanded all back, remasked and sprayed first tint coat.

Afternoon sun and camera does not show the true colour as still wet:

Dude! Thats kinda sucks.:eek: I was concerned with that happening when I was sanding my neck. I decided to leave it a little thicker than I like to avoid just such a thing. Good fix though, chalk it up to a nother lesson learned.:)

2nd Tint Coat:

Will even up coats with steel wool and then do the head plate. After that, clear coats.

I love seeing the in progress pics and I have moderate clinical A.D.D.-- not boring me one bit!

The skunk stripe doesn't look bad either. Again, great save.

Chill, wouldja? I like your build, alright? It would just be nice to see the progress more, rather than coming to your thread, eagerly anticipating progress pics showing it coming together- and being a little disappointed by just "more words."

And really, if this thread is NOT intended to entertain those of us who are watching it, what IS it for?

This is not a TV show. This is a step-by-step guide in a DIY forum. This is to inform, teach, and document a home DIY project. It IS entertaining to those who expect what is to be expected.

Neve1073lover is building a guitar from scratch.
Rather than post "I am going to build a guitar" on one day, and then post again 3 months later saying "I'm done building my guitar. Here it is!", Neve1073 is being kind enough to explain every step of the process, constantly take photographs in between when he is actually working on it, and then go to the effort of uploading the pics and putting these posts together. All of this, so that future DIYers will have something helpful to study for their projects.

I don't know about you, but when I build something, I want to get it done as quickly as possible. Taking a lot of pictures and posting a step-by-step guide is very time-consuming. Neve is obviously VERY generous with us, his viewers -- mostly consisting of COMPLETE strangers!

And what does he get in return?

"COME ON!!!!!1!!2BBQWTF?!1 Less words and more action! I want to see it DONE and NOWW!!! Geeeeesh." (slightly exaggerated)

This is a generous gesture by Neve, nothing less than a great asset to this community. I don't feel that there is ANY reason whatsoever to be bashing him like this.

Look, the post threw me, as it made me wonder if I was posting in the right board.

I also did not understand the comment as I was trying to help and educate (if not to entertain).

I take the good with the bad, and I am happy to show my mistakes.

I am not a professional woodworker and I am trying to encourage people to have a go. Maybe I also like some positive feedback. Strokes my ego?

Anyway, enough said.

I have touched up the runs and moving onto the head. I want to tint it black and then I will spray entire guitar with nitrocellulose.
 
I find the step by step commentary & snaps extremely edifying.
I will AT NO TIME IN MY FUTURE LIFE attempt such a project; but as I read & watch & follow I have greater appreciation for those who do, as well as further confirmation that I'm not up to the task at any level except desire.
CONTINUE please!
