well, multipattern mics arent ideal either(in purist terms, I am no purist, just stating the info for whoever wants to hear)..only single pattern figure 8s are ideal. Same with Jecklin Disc..the original german white paper stated that only pure omnis(ie not switchable pattern) should be used for "exact" results.

Agreed. I was just offering some options to try that might actually work well enough for the intended purpose and save some money. We had a discussion about the differences between pure omni mikes and the omni position of multi-pattern mikes recently. The Jecklin disc requires an obstruction (the disc) close to the mikes. Multi-pattern mikes in omni mode won't produce the intended result with an object so close to the capsules. As you say, only true omnis can produce the sound of an actual Jecklin disc.

By the way, BigRay, you seem to like the AT 4050. It's the only multi-pattern mike I have, and I like it too. Probably because, for being a multi-pattern condenser, it seems to be one of the more accurate ones. I seem to recall David Josephson recommending it to me for that reason over some of the other multi-pattern mikes in that price range (under $1000). I used to have two and I sometimes wish I still had them both.

Yeah, I do orchestral location work, and need clean mics that have a good snr. The 4050 is the only "cheap" mic I have found that stands in leagues with my gefells, scheops, dpa, etc for the work I do. Tony Faulkner likes the NT-5 for orchestra work, but ive never heard it.

Do you happen to know what instruments
Tony uses the NT5s on?

I´ve used NT5's, in ORTF method, for recording small orchestras, and the results are good.

I regularly use a Studio Projects B1 and a B3 for my M/S front-end, into an M-Audio Octane's M/S inputs, then into ADAT Blackfaces via lightpipe, with great results. It's my favorite drum overhead setup too. Amazingly 3D sounding depth, besides the stereo left/right image that you'd expect. The Octane lets you dial in the amount of stereo separation too, which is a nice feature.

It's my piano mic. Love it. And they're almost $700 new last I checked. You might be able to get one for a little under $600 used, but....
