I've been updating over the past few weeks. Both of my old tape machines have been serviced, and I wanted to record with the computer on or off. I also added a new monitor to replace my old Apple Cinema display, which is now in my office.

One thing about my office is that it's where I spend most of my time and earn my living. I don't have anything in there that doesn't get used, so there isn't a lot of overlap in terms of gear. Most of the gear in there is there to do what it does. I'm not much of a collector.

I have an old kit that is on the small size because it works well in my space and sounds very big. I always leave it mic'd up, making it fast to get things done. Despite what YT tells you, having the right kit for the right room and knowing how to tune drums makes drum recording simple. You don't need tons of mics, samples, compressors, etc. Start with good-sounding drums and cymbals. I use something called Tune Bot, which is fantastic.

I don't do much experimenting. I usually work to get projects out the door.

I added a few tablets I bought for about $50 each on Amazon. They allow me to control ProTools from the drumset and vocal booth. I have an iPad on an old mic stand that does the same thing. I also made some extension boxes that are GCFI protected and provide USB charging, which have been handy.

I have all my mics, which is more about quality than quantity, as I am one person working in one room, in the old cabinet that the Teac is sitting on.

I could be missing some, but I have:

Neumann U87Ai - hated on forums, sounds good on anything
Mojave MA-201 and a pair of 200s (which are my outside kick and drum overheads)
AEA R87 - I think that's the number. Great ribbon mic!
Telefunken drum kit mics - the big kick mic (which I use on bass) and an M-81 I like on snare. The 2 M-80s are usually on guitar amps.
Three Earthworks - one I use on snare. All of them get used on acoustic guitars
Pair of Royer R10s - Guitar cabs. Sometimes overheads.
Then I have some old Shure things that I mainly use for video props and some dynamics. I may be forgetting a few things.

I built some of these extension cords with a GCFI and USB for the tablets and various things:

Studio update. I've added some gear, refined, stored a bunch of gear, sold some, bought some more, etc. rinse. repeat. as you do. :)
I'm really happy with this little space and how easy it is to pull out cords, stands, mics, patch them in, record via tape (16 or 2), record via computer thru MOTU interface, or even record with my teenage engineering TX-6/TP-7 (great for quick ideas with just a few patch cables!). Most days I just enjoy being here, relaxing, playing instruments and having some peace with my stuff (and scotch, of course).

Wow, that is really a very nice space. Still cheaper than chasing women, classic cars and going to the casino, probably even fishing! (bass boat and truck is over $100K alone)
