yeah I read it..and disabled the audio card and Game port in Device Manager for XP.

I had to re-enable the Audio card....due to no sound at all.

I left the Game port disabled and all is good...no latency issues!

NO latency....did 3-4 tracks no issues...

thanks for all the help.

now to make notes of all the settings on a piece of paper and play!

just to add some final notes and jpgs in case
someone else new to Kristal can use the info:

My first problem was the Windows Mixer settings.
a. Right click on Windows Volume icon- select Options
b. Setup Playback- only have Volume Control and Microphone checked
(deselecting AUX removed a large amount of hiss, also may have to go into ADVANCED and select db boost for microphone if you can't hear the mic)
c. Setup Recording- only select Microphone, all others deselected.
**This is for a Microphone only setup. LINE IN may be slightly different.

FIX for the Latency
Downloaded the ASIO4ALL.
Then in Kristal- Select only ASIO4ALL. <see jpg>

Then Disabling the Game port in Windows/ Hardware/Device Manager. As mentioned in the above article.

Also checking latency settings was done in Kristal Audio Output, as was mentioned in previous post. (didn't need to change anything in the ASIO4ALL settings for my pc).

my pc is a old Dell 700mhz, 128M, 40gig 7200, Aureal Vortex 8830soundcard.
Windows XP.. old ...but it works!

cool deal man. you have much more patience than i had when i was trying to get Kristal going for the first time. if you have'nt already, you should share your experience at the Kristal forum to help out other frustrated Kristal newbies.

in your asio4all panel, it's showing 512 buffer samples. that is your latency. if i remember correctly, you divide your number of samples by the sample rate your using to figure out your latency in milliseconds.

512 buffer samples / 44.1 khz sample rage = 11.6 milliseconds. that's pretty damn good considering you are using a regular o' pc sound card. asio4all rocks when you need it. if you have'nt tried it yet, you may be able to get an even lower latency by adjusting the buffer samples slider in the asio4all panel. i think the lowest stable setting i was able to use was 256 or 384 (it's been a while). low latency is only really needed if you're monitoring the live input. for example, running a guitar direct in and using the kristalizer distortion.

also, don't forget about asio4all if/when you upgrade your sound card. i've read about some people using it instead of the sound card manufacturer's asio driver and getting better results.

I wondered about that. I moved the sliders and recorded a bit..but didn't know what I was doing (terminolgy wasn't understood).

So the lower the better on the buffer size because its divided by the sample rate? now it makes more sense.

For FREE its great stuff, its a good beginner setup, imo.

But we all know how we gearheads get....next thing it'll be adding some real monitors on the pc, then a better mic, then a better pre-amp, start doing a room acoustics, then ram, rom.......!!!

I do have an old passive monitoring system sitting around...hmm...

might as well try what you have. maybe it will be all you need. the worst thing that could happen is you will learn the monitors weaknesses after trying a few mixes. i'm still trying to get my stuff together too. i need room treatment, monitor stands, new cpu/mobo/ram, an iso box for my pc and monitor amp.................i'm starting to believe that it's never ending.

yeah, its never ending. the attitude has to determine if its "fun" or a frustration from chasing the elusive technology rabbit!

damn I was listening to some NTracks Mp3...very impressive.
I tried a little pc recording once or twice over the years but it never meshed with me and my situation (family using the pc too).

like a broken record,
I compare gear to my first $1200 4-track cassette in 79, and this KRISTAL shit is amazing, FREE, 16 tracks, with comps, limits, burn straight to CDR, or post....its all relevant to the comparison.

I could understand many posters when they say the software has alot to do with personal preference. the layout.

Kristal is cool with me.
We'll see what the next weakest link is? RAM? HD? PREAMP? MIC?

If I can do a HR as good as my Tascam 2488...I may get those DynAudio BM5a's after all!
