I have been testing out my new monitors again tonight, and I was blown away by a very simple song: Johnny Cash's remake of Reznor's "Hurt." The acoustic guitar sounds absoulutely beautiful. Anyone know what gear was used on that recording? Not sure if this is the right forum for this question. The vocals are also incredible, but I can't hope to emulate Cash's voice anytime in the life.

I agree; John's later work is monumental and, I think, will be remembered as much as his earlier career.

Try Googling it to see what you find.
Rick Rubin recorded him very simply and very high quality, that I know (I have the album; if you don't, look for it or the boxed set); I believe Johnny sings into a C12, if the pics are to be trusted, but what the guitar was miked with I don't know. Although since we are at that level, a U67 or similar would fit right in.
The pics of the room are nice: a darkly-lit room, with a big old armchair, blankets hung around it, and just the voc mic hanging down. Done very intimately, as befits the music.
If you haven't seen the video 'Hurt', do find a way; it's overwhelming.

I agree. A jewel in the sea of garbage that makes up MTV output! My jaw dropped the first time I saw it.
 
Ditto about the video. One of the best videos I have ever seen.

Covered this song once, and I couldn't come within a country mile of how good Johnny did it...
