Is this the final solution to guitar intonation problems?

Our typical gig is 4 hours in 4 50 minutes sets. About half the jobs are outdoors. I have to tune multiple times during the initial sets as things change with outdoor temperature.

Am I the only one that went "HOLY CRAP!" when reading that?

At first I figured that this must be because you are playing bars or club venues, but then you say you play outside so I am left wonderign what sort of Draconian sonuvabitch you work for. I can't imagine trying to play a four hour gig of originals.

I guess that using a reference tone on tape makes sense becuase tape speed can vary.

I've never had this problem with my deck. this is ridiculous. if the tape is out of tune, ADJUST THE PITCH CONTROL.

why the agression? While Light does appear a little offensive, he always reminds people it is his opinion. We cannot speak for all nor should we, an opinion is only that...

And i for one have not perfect pitch but understand the obvious advantages of coming as damn near close to it as I can get. If you don;t see or don;t care about it, because "the massess" don't care (pun intended Imaduck), you should pick a different hobby. IMHO ofcourse.

Light was being extaordinarily patronising IMO.

Call me 'Mr Sensitive" but I've been playing music for long enough to get pissed off with somebody when they get an attitude and accuse me of not knowing how to tune my instrument.

Using what as a reference?

I agree that mostly this isn't a problem - but it could be in theory.

Anyway - why shout at me, I was just trying to see Light's point of view.
Christ - I can't win!

USING YOUR DIGITAL TUNER AS A REFERENCE.

Sorry. I'm not shouting, really. That's just my "common sense" voice. Sorry, really. its not about winning. nobody should feel bad here. everybody's opionion counts.

Our group plays mostly classic rock, R&B, some country, and in general music from past years. We play some local clubs and bars and a lot of private parties. Many are weddings, which in the summer months are quite often outside. Others are corporate picnics and other similar events. Most listeners are baby boomers and want music from the 60's and 70s, which is a big part of what we play. We play no originals.

Our coming events include an outside wedding next weekend (7-11 PM under a tent), a singles club dance, a fund raiser night at a local country club, corporate christmas parties, and a new years eve wedding. There is a large lake in the area and we have played a number of events there, some on boats beside the docks area, others on flatbed trucks facing the water.

We do this because we enjoy it. In past years about 1/4 of our gigs were freebess for various fund raising events. We have done fewer of those in recent years, not because of the $, but lack of promotion. Many folks who arrange these are new to music events. They mean well but do not know how to plan or advertise and many result in a nice setup playing to an emtpy field or parking lot. Our group has been playing together for about 6 years.

The greatest contribution Australia has made to guitar playing since Angus Young, perhaps???

Angus Young was Scottish, dufus!

Maybe this is true for other floating bridges - but weirdly my deluxe strat seems to not mind string breakages nearly so much.

You can always cheat by tuning up a tone and transposing anyway :)

Hmmm - probably easier to pick up the LP in retrospect ;)

You may have your bridge adjusted so that it's against the block, i.e., it may be set so that you only go down in pitch, not up. If one has the bridge set that way, breaking a string is not that big a deal. Mine is set so that it swings both ways... not that there's anything wrong with that. ;^)

I like the way that it works (my tremelo notes go both below and above pitch), but breaking a string is a stop event. Transposing is not an option because the rest of the strings all change pitch by different amounts when one breaks. Fortunately, I very rarely break strings.

Mystery solved :D
