is this considered a soundcard, if so what do you think?

On the input side I use my mixer for its preamps (it's got 6, but currently I only use 4 for recording drums), phantom power and sometimes guitar DI. I don't insert to any outboard gear, as I don't have any.

Then the outputs from the soundcard come back into the mixer. They feed CR outs to monitors and headphones, and RCA outs to an amp so I can record to cassette tape (man I love the warmth of analog haha)
 
but with these sound cards that have a zillion outputs, you don't really need the outs of a mixer.
 
one disadvantage of the onxy mixers (if you consider this a disadvantage) is that the signal goes into the firewire pre the eq. It would be nice to take advantage of the onyx's features but a pure signal is important too.


Aslo i was under the impression that if you use a rack mounted preamp, you could send the signal to the preamp and then from there into an outboard compressor or EQ before sending it to the A/D converters. how would this be possible without some extensive routing with the mixer?

True. If your sequencing software has a reasonable bussing structure, you can make use of all those outputs for monitor, phone, & submixes etc.

IF you're using a mixer, and you want to employ an outboard unit in your recording chain, you would just use one of the mixer's insert jacks to go out to the unit & back in again

That all depends on the rackmount preamp. Some offer inserts that work the same as inserts on a mixer.
