OK, so the back leg hinges off of the the bolt in the block behind the main post, but is it cut around the block, to swivel? How is the top of the back leg clearing the block and the post? Does that make sense? I'm medicated.... :confused:

The leg is just there to hold it up for the picture view.

Here it is collapsed. Also notice that the piece that holds the guitar neck is adjustable to three positions and is also held by a 3-inch bolt:

OK, so now I get that it's not a swivel, that it's a discrete, set adjustment....does the leg straddle the block, or sit to one side of it?

It sits to one side. Like I said, I have to remove the bolt, pull the collapsed leg off, and flip it around to bolt it back on for use.

I used some cheap pine to model it before cutting up my nice walnut plank. I also made sure that all of my guitars could sit in it but my acoustics barely lean back far enough in the neck cradle.

I think I finally get it - thanks for talking me through it, and for the pics....I think that's exactly the thing, and would make a nice project in and of itself. Thanks again for being so generous with yoour inspiration! :) :cool:

I'd been wanting to play it upright style just because it's an Ampeg and had been thinking along the lines of a peg (Ampeg = Amplified Peg) mounted to a frame that could grip the body but that was just too complicated without (God forbid) drilling holes into the bass. Then one night I'm subbing for a band and they kick off a Stray Cats tune when it occurred to me to set it on my standard-issue guitar stand. It worked but it was too clumsy and a bit too low. But the idea was born.

I had been thinking about an endpin arrangement too, but the body of this bass is pretty thin (plywood! but sounds great to me - and it was free!), and I don't want to mess with it any more than I can avoid - it seems to be a 60's MIJ Kay (the serial number ah....label.... came off so it's hard to trace exactly), but it's all retro knobs and primitive and sounds like a badass standup to me....
...now I'll able to hold it that way too...without my chair.... :D :cool:
