Damn...I'm gonna have to throw all my SM57's away now! Maybe I can use the SM58's instead

YOU CAN'T DO THAT, THEY ARE LIVE MICS TOO!!!!!! :p :p :p

Hey MCI I challenge you to a face off. Your "Studio Mics" vs my radio shack $10 mics. I mean come on radio shack even says they can be used for numerous studio applications. :D

Because Shure DESIGNED the SM-57 to BE A STAGE MIC.

It is DESIGNED for LIVE APPLICATIONS

Read Shure's application list.

Shure's app list doesn't list the 57 as a live mic.

Here is Shure's description of the 57:

"With its bright, clean sound and carefully contoured presence rise, the SM57 is ideal for live sound reinforcement and recording. It has an extremely effective cardioid pickup pattern which isolates the main sound source while minimizing background noise. In the studio, it is excellent for recording drums, guitar, and woodwinds."

Yawn. Troll.

Would you guys get it straight once and for all! Now I've got to go diggin through the trash can to get my mics back!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

You'd figure that even if shure originally made this mic for its live mic line, that by now with all the talk about this being one of the most used studio mics around that shure would pick up on the new marketing technique as listing it as great for studio work... OH WAIT THEY DID!!!!

Glad it turned out to be a cold solder joint.

Get used to it... I think there will be lots more where that came from, sometime after the end of June 2006, when the RoHS regulations kick in, and the solder used for assembling non-military electronics will be lead-free. The lead-free solder melts at a much higher themperature, so I'm betting there'll be even more cold solder joints. Oh well - it's for the good of Europe. I'm betting that the U.S. will go this way in a few years too, eliminating as many harmful chemicals from the landfills as possible.

OK. I will bring my U87s, SM7, TLM103, and a few microtech/gefell mics and you can use your Equivilent mics.

I will use a few choice pre-amps (avalon, Focusrite and 2 Neves) and a 2" MCI fully aligned machine as well as a Allen & Heath large format console.

What song do you want to record to go head to head?

You choose. We will record them and post them for others to critique.

kid clash is absolutley right about the lead-free solder. This also makes re-working a circuit board more difficult. When there is a problem with a new board they sometimes put it aside and hand-fix the problem or simply run it back through the solder wave. That's a lot of stress on the components if they have to multi-pass over and above the multi-passes for surface mounted components . Good call kid.

Hmmm I would actually like to hear the outcome of the above challange... I however dont think you can win by denying SM57's... they have pretty much been the staple of the metal/rock diet for a good while...

Either way, banging off brand names of equipment you may or may not have is kind of a playground activity... What good is that gear if you're not a good engineer (That wasnt a statement about MCI2424's skills)...

Besides, can you beat the affordability/versitility of the SM57 in that price range and availibility?

Read Shure's application list.

I have plenty of knowledge about recording and anyone who thinks that an SM-57 is NOT intended for live applications has not 1 ounce of recording experience.

Man, you crack me up.

You may have "knowledge about recording", but it would appear you have LITTLE to NO experience!

I can throw around all day killer guitar tracks I have done with an SM-57's! I could give a rats ass what they were "designed" to be used for, they tend to work QUITE well for recording! MUCH better engineers than you and I have used that mic on many tracks that are on grammy award winning albums.

Get a life dumbshit.

What exactly is a "stage" mic and what is a "studio" mic ?
If you have a studio but cannot work/don't use with a decent dynamic mic you're not worth all the neumann/geffels ....

A mic is a mic and so many "studio" mics wind up on stage as do many "stage" microphones show up in the studio.

You should tell the guys that recorded Zeppelin and all those other bands that used those 57s on all those legendary recordings

that happens to me sorta. I have to have the +12 gain on with the gain on the firebox pretty far up if I want to get a signal from my amp. I have the sm57 close miked near the grill with the volume turned up at a reasonable level to get a signal. But I pick up other noises still. I recorded a riff and in the background I heard my dad talking from the other room.

But I thought all great bands went to the studio just to play live, don't they? :D

Great quote brother, I use both of mine for Instruments, Vocals and Live Performances and they roll with no problems. They are affordable and reliable.

One of the guys that recorded Led Zep is a moderator on PSW's forum in the "Whatever Works" section Terry is a real good man and would be more than happy to set things straight
