Interesting what I learned about the DMP-3

I also. replaced my Blue Tube. When the BT Blueup on me (get it?) I got a Voicemaster PRO for a cheap price. I don't like to say bad things about 1 bad experience with a product, but, not only did the BT burn up, but it just plain sucked as far as sound was concerned. It DID excel at wasting electricity, however. So, it was good at SOMETHING at least.

The one I tried sounded like I had a mic on a TV and accidentally disonnected the cable signal. This was at a very moderate gain setting.

I just wanted to mention to chessrock... Nice recordings man!

ANother Big thanks to Chessrock

Hey man , umm thanks

I am a little late to this tread , and its probibly old and dull to some by now , but I wanted to give congrates to chessrock for the DMP3 Recordings. I am a big fan of sound samples , im not much for specs, and I had been one to lump the DMP3 in with the multitudes of crappy pre's. Well your recordings did show what that little thing can do. I might just buy one tommorow. Thanks man

Haven't checked in on this one in a few days . . . but nice to see some compliments. Thanks for the kind words, RE! and Frusciante.

I bought a DMP3 a few months ago and I have been very happy with it. Recently, I decided to take myself back to basics and explore techniques for getting the best sounds I could on electric guitars, bass, acoustic guitar and vocals. I used every pre-amp in my humble studio and the DMP3 was consistently excellent.

I also learned that mic placement, mic choice and quality of source sound are all much more important than anything else. A DMP3 won't make my bass sound like a Hofner, but it will capture all the nuances of my bass.

I never tried a Grace 101, but had been thinking about getting one. Thanks Chess--I think I'll just save up for a great River and call this inane chase for the perfect preamp a done deal!

So... Should I sell my dbx 386's and buy four DMP3's instead?

Can you get equipment to rack mount two of them in one space?

Also, where can I learn a lot more DIY home audio electronics? Is this something that is too dificult to even fool with? I've wanted to get into DIY stuff for a while, but have always had a hard time deciding where to start.

Depends. If you need the extra channels, then it might not be a bad idea. I wouldn't mind having the 386's A/D converters, personally. Those might come in handy -- they smoke anything else in the budget range, imho.

Wow! It seems like this DI-port is a great "bang per buck" here in europe. At the same cost as a DMP3 I get two good preamps, probably a better AD/DA converter than I already have (1010lt), I can use all 10 channels of the soundcard and as bonus I get a volume knob that I can use for active monitors! This seems to good to be true.

Thanks chess!

Swede, I don't have a DMP3, but I do have a DiPort ... I've been very happy with it. The only things I have to compare it to are my other pres:

* Dan Alexander-racked Neve (1073/1066 variety)
* The pres in my Digi 001
* The pres in my jettisoned BlooToob

The BlooToob was good for noise, mud, and, actually, as a bass DI (better than the Art Tube MP I tried). BUT, the Neve is better than BT for bass DI (maybe not much of a surprise ...)

The Neve is good for thick beefiness. It's not transparent, as you'd expect.

For transparent, my only options are the Digi pres and the DI Port. I will say that the DI Port has more high end AND low end than the Digi pres, generally overall better clarity ... this holds true even if I use DI Port's analog outs to the analog ins on the Digi (ie, the Digi converters). It's more noticeable when I use the DI Port's converters going SPDIF. This also holds true even though the DI Port does not allow me to sync it to the Digi via Word Clock, which should make the sound quality of digitally linked devices even better. This is all a matter of degrees; differences are slight on one track but I imagine if I took the time to record several tracks each way and compared the mutiltrack versions, I might hear the differences as more significant.

Just my rambling for more perspective. :) I think you'd be happy with the DI Port if you get it.

I still think my Yamaha MLA7 8 channel is better and now at $500 its a steal.

there hasnt been much hype on these, but they were made to improve the sound of the O2R and they have a good sound to them.

I did try a Burr Brown opa 2134 and I preferred the fairchild 455 that came with it.

Thanks! So the DI-port converters are a step up from the digi001 converters also? Great! The DI-port is definately on my list of future gear list.
