Yes you are correct. With that unit you'd get 8 channels via adat lightpipe, 2 channels of analog I/O, and two channels of spdif which is sort of like a two channel version of an adat I/O only they have the rca style connectors.

Wow - Thanks for straightening that out for me. I'm guessing that the spdif is
for something like a keyboard that has a SPDIF output. Finally I'm beginning to understand how some soundcards are just soundcards, and others have all kinds of other inputs.

'ppreciate the assistance,

hmmm i didnt even think about that... a second delta44... HMM interesting idea. i wonder if i would have any issues with the drivers? latency from another card? might i be better off selling the 44 and getting a 1010.. i am still contemplating returning the octane and buying a 2/4 channel preamp that is better... you guys know of any?

Maybe there's a better fit for you, and maybe there isn't. I don't really know - I haven't owned that many pre's.

I think that a lot of us obsess about these types of things, I know I do. Before this drives you crazy, maybe you should read the thread in this section called something like, "$500 vs $5,000..." Any better fit might only be a very slight improvement for you.

I say that if the Octane felt right to you, then it is right. Enjoy it.

And there's something to be said for the idea of headroom (assuming that you'll want to expand in the future).

There are a number of digital micpre's that utilize spdif. Art Digital MPA, Apogee MiniMe, Aphex Digital 207, are just a few examples of mic pre's that use spdif. But yes there are things like keyboards etc... that can use spdif also.

i have been hating myself ever since i bought the octane and no definately didnt feel right, so i returned it tody for complete refund but in store credit, but thats ok because they can order me anything i want, so im on the search now for a 2/4 channel preamp for 600 bucks... obviously best bang for the buck, and probably solid state to keep the quality up since i heard tubes below 700 arent very good. thanks for the help everyone! If i were to get the octane again i would just buy a DMP3 since its got the same pres and is only 150 bucks.. thanks!

You might consider the FMR RNC preamp then which is in your budget. They are a good quality pre! You can aslo get two of them if you need 4 pres. All I can say is , it is better to get the best pre you can within your budget so you don't end up having to sell it off for something better, unless you don't mind doing that. Depending on how serious you are and plan to be in the future, go for it and save more so you can get something like a John Hardy or Great River preamp. You probably won't have buyer's remorse with those units, but there are many other great choices in that price range. Good luck!

yea, the fmr rnp is probably the best pre in your price range.

hmm FMR RNC or RNP the RNC is just a compressor is it not??? ill research this, is this preamp a lotbetter than the DMP3?

RNP = Really Nice Pre
RNC = Really Nice Compressor

Sorry the Octane didn't work out for you....

hmm yeah i dont need a really nice compressor, but a really nice pre is definately what i want!! lol so the RNP would be my choice... i also heard excellant things about the BG-1 from DAV and would be willing to shell out the extra 100 to buy it if necessary.... the only issue is that i have instore credit lol... i wonder if they can actually order the preamp from europe.... :( maybe i should start working on getting a refund in check form....

I have been sold on the DAV BG-1.... but since i only have store credit it might be difficult to get that through the store... so if thats the case then the RNP will be my next choice thanks everyone!
