I'm no expert, but the machine is likely to either pre-date or be concurrent with the introduction of 456/911, so it's probably designed to work with 406/LPR35.

The 3440 was spec'd to handle a variety of tape formulations including 456.

also with the take up reels i have the large hubs on so which one do i need?
1/4" x 7" Plastic Reel /small hub
or
1/2" x 7" Plastic Reel /high torque, no tape slot

also, i'm still looking for the switch if someone could point me to it.

I meant better suited but it's a toss up really, especially that the 3440 will work fine with SM911 as well, especially that it's much cheaper than LPR35.

The LPR35 and SM911 are identical, with the only exception that the LPR35 is 1mil and is closest to the Maxell UD 35 [also 1mil] for which the 3440 was originally setup for, as per the manual.

You can, however, use SM911 without ill effect and with great results. It's your call actually and that you can get SM911 for $15 bucks makes it easy to choose.

Well, you can take off the large plastic HUBS easily and use the 7" reels. It's much less expensive that way.

You want to get the:

1/4" x 7" Plastic Reel /small hub
or
1/4" x 7" Plastic Reel /w box
[I'd go with this one 'cause it has a box included for an extra dollar or so]

As far as the switch, you should post a separate thread / question on this and see if that helps.

have you tried the sm468? they describe it as the same as 911 but with the "west coast sound"....what's that?

I dunno what they mean but they're wrong about it being the same as SM911. The SM468 has a higher coercivity and thus bias requirement than that of SM911. It's a fine tape but prior to using I'd tweak the bias for it to sound 'right'.

Don't get caught up in the details and hype. Just get the SM911 and take up reel and get your 3440 to working condition.

I agree, if you want new fresh tape buy SM-911 and do some recordings.
 
Forgot about the switch, I suggest you buy two and replace the inner switch at the same time..if it's not broken yet it will happen soon.
And buy or borrow a solder-iron before you start the surgery:cool:
