I am giving free online engineering lessons...

First of all, due to the overwhelming response I have decided to expand this course and have started asking musician, producer and studio manager friends to contribute. This thing is growing very fast. I may set up a mailing list to keep people informed when new lessons/labs are posted.

Secondly, you CAN make a great record in very little time at any location. While professional studios have isolation, good monitors and equipment please remember how many great records have been made in houses (even without a "remote truck"). In fact, Peter Gabriel often records drums in his control room (which must make checking mic settings over the speakers difficult...to say the least). As long as you have good mics (that are well selected for their use), placed in positions/locations that best pick up the sound you are looking for, going through good mic pres (also well selected for their use), and getting that sound recorded as directly as possible (rather than going through bad cables or effects that will ruin your good sound)...then you can make a great record anywhere.

This is a great opportunity....Thank you for offering it............TRUE

I'm in!

You can certainly count me in! And thank you so much for this privilege.

in

we will keep checking the thread until we get some dates or a mailing list

Wow,

I wish I could help.

You have a Dvcam editor?

I guess those darn DVCAM operators are everywhere now...

The other side of the industry, an army of guys with Avid Xpress and a sony PD-150!

This is AWESOME and exactly what I've been waiting for!

Yeeehaaaw

This is just what I need....

I took a year out of college to do some travelling, fortunately I managed to get me into a band and now all I ever think about is music and recording...I love it!!! This course is a great idea ...and you can count me in!!!

I am looking forward to the summer already...My band is starting to get Gigs, we have just recorded are Demo - and now this!!!! Yeeeehaaaaw :D

I joint this board just at the right time to read this thread. I am in for this but July seem a long way and I have just reread that long thread on mic in the mic forum.

The Making of Rumours, Fleetwood Mac

Hello there,

Tried to find a website which deals with the making of Rumour, but so far no luck, so Harvey, Ghettorig, BentRabbit or anyone of you, do you know any links which will let us read some of the info you will get on the DVD.

Did find this www.sararhiannon.com/rumours.htm it is an interview about several songs, the motives behind them and what went on during the recording of these songs.

The Course...........................Very good idea Bruce, thanks a lot!!

Keep in mind that this is not required viewing by Bruce; it's only a suggestion by me, if you're interested in how some albums come together.

It's put out by Rhino Home Video, and it's part of their "Classic Albums" series. It's simply called: "FLEETWOOD MAC Rumours". The catalog number is: R2 4465.

kind of related

Very cool idea Bruce. I was thinking recently about my own studio that I run part time. It does well however, bookings have been less and less each year. Now.... PRO TOOLS.... It seems to me it has been a God send and a curse. As we know everyone has a setup ( Pro Tools, Sonar, Cubase, etc.)at home these days if they are a musician. I agree the quality that comes out of these home setups varys greatly. Some very good, some bad. It is funny that a product that was created to ease the burden on engineers with regard to mixing and editing has turned out to be our biggest downfall. Had there been no" Protools", people would still have to come to studios ( your and mine) for the simplest of projects. A session that used to require 3 hours of studio time now can take only 20 minutes. Not to mention the extra income when we sold tape to clients and marked it up a little. It will be interesting in 10 years to see where the industry is at. Who ever thought The Hit Factory would close? It's like if a studio that has served the likes of John Lennon, M. Jackson, Madona can't make it any more what hope do I have? Maybe this wasn't related but I had to put it somewhere!

Bruce, after reading through tips and opinions etc. on your site, I'm really looking forward to your courses! Between HR.com and recordingproject.com, the learning I've experienced-- from professionals and trial & error newbies has been a pleasure. Happily, I've been around engineering and technology, since I was a kid. So my nightly reading missions are fruitful, and I feel I'm gaining a lot of understanding. Though my brain seems to be on overload, each direction I've taken toward learning the recording/mixing ropes has further fueled my interest. Thanks in advance for the educational opportunity!
~Another anxious student.
A/ adds Bruce's website to favorites.

Thanks Harvey :)

Hey timmerman, here it is:

http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=4465

It says that it's $19.99, but when you add it to your cart, it's only $14.98

Thanks for the link ghettorig, unfortunately the info is only advertising........................I was hoping to find some "real" info like interviews about the time they made the album ect. So a little bit like what you will get when you watch the DVD but than more in textformat.

Harvey, I know that this DVD is not course material, I would just read it for my own interest, as all info helps in the understanding of the bigger picture of recording and the banddynamics and ups and downs of a particular group.

First of all Bruce, I dont know you at all. But I very much respect this idea of yours.

Listening to the toku baba mp3's and reading about your many years of experience I am sure I will learn TONS of stuff from you ,and im looking forward to it.

I think it says somthing about your character for you to go about this in such an honest and truthfull way. Your passion for recording and wanting to do this just for the good of music is down right impressive.

You should put a link on your site for anyone who wants to "donate" just on a volunteer basis. I wouldnt think bad of you at all if you did so. And I wouldnt mind donating, considering the material merrits it , which im sure it will.

Thank you , Im looking forward to it

There's no need to wait for a link if you want to give away some money. Just send it to him and while you're at it send us all some. :D

SIGN UP LIST / Guest lectures

I have set up a sign up list for the free Recording and Mixing lessons at http://BruceAMiller.us (the course will start in July).

The great Lenny White is among the many musicians, producers, engineers and studio managers that have agreed to either allow me to tape lessons from their facilities or to contribute guest lectures themselves.

See you in July!
