wow. lot's of feedback to sort through here. general message is that the ending sucks. need to work on that first.

extra special thanks to my friend guernica. i pondered posting a 'bass only' mix the first time i heard his tracks. i'm a guernica bass track addict now. not sure i'll be able to post anything without his help. anyone know of a chicago area support group for that?

kramer, thanks for the nice comments. so you bought two electric sets? what did you buy? anyway the drums are these: http://store.yahoo.com/smartloops/drystudiokit.html. just cutting and pasting, which is by far my best musical skill!

chris, thanks for checking it out. i agree that the ending sucks. there are two stereo bgv's and four hard panned bgv's so i guess that adds up to EIGHT bgv tracks! yipes. btw, i downloaded the juliet tracks but didn't wind up with anything that i thought was any more worthwhile than what you'd gotten from everyone else.

crawdad i like the drums also. smartloops dry kit.

macle you nailed it on the ending. i hit the warning track at about 2:45 and stopped before i ran into the wall! need a better ending. any suggestions?

guernica you rule!

Doug H. thanks for the nice comments and for checking out the song.

WATYF i like the drums as well. cut and paste....cut and paste.... ending sucks....working on that. i'm amazed at guernica's track and that lick after the first chorus kills me! almost wet myself the first time i listened to that.

Lt. Bob recurring theme about the ending sucking. yes, that's me trying to play the guitar.

sabbath you nailed the feedback that i got from a good friend of mine. i have a long way to go with singing lead vocals. for some reason i relax when singing background but when i'm up front and center i get all tense and shit.

boydrj thanks for the comments. personally i like it very dry. i'm convinced that it's best if i don't ever touch a plugin again.

dtb thanks dtb, thanks.

bdbdbucksKID thanks for checking it out. yeah, the bass player rules.

sluice i'll post again once i fix the ending but i'm sure i won't be adding any effects cause i always make things worse when i do that. i think i'm just gonna stay dry from now on.

christiaan check out guernica's song 'monkeyfeet'. when i heard that the first time i knew that i wouldn't be attempting my own bass tracks anymore.

Khompewtur if you're talking about that thing that g does after the first chorus i understand. i'm already committed for #4. still haven't done #2 yet.

freshears glad you liked it. the guy on bass is the mighty G man!

amazing_critic glad you liked it so much.

Damn fine tune, well performed and like most everyone else, I was a little surprised by the ending....but it looks like you're already working on that. Great job guys, I just can't believe it sounds so good dry!

wow! no eq? that's an amazing job of tracking....there's no need for any......the vocals sound amazing dry too....what kind of mic did you track them with?

great mix, great song

Great song guys!

Bass rocks,way to go G.
That turnaround at 1:20,woa!:D

Vocals sound great considering their dry.
A touch of verb and they would soar.

Really nice writing,I dig the lyrics.

How did you guys do the collab?

Fine work,
Pete

nice

This is a really refreshing song. Enjoying it. I very much like the harmonies and that bass is the money. Cheers guys!

Erland

This is really a great song. That is the first thing that struck me. Then we get to the nitty gritty:

The drums sound great. Loops, huh? Nice selection and work there.

Bass is absolutely stellar. I think this is my favorite of all Guenica bass work here. Of course, that's a hard choice! Just has a great groove, tone and great playing all around.

Vocals were great, especially the harmonies. A touch of verb will take this to the next level.

Mix is really nice as well. For a dry recording this is fantastic. YOu have the base set. Now go add the icing! Oh, and fix that end. ;) :D

Great job! *****

Nice vocals all around. Great hamonies. Real catchy song. Familiar title too. :) I liked the bass fills. They complimented the song extremely well without becoming overbearing. I liked the drums too.

The vocals sit pretty well considering the fact that there are no effects. Probably a little compression is needed to get them just right (a few words here and there were tough to make out). I'm sure that's easy to address.

Great job.

This is still great...lol; the "new" hasn't worn off on me :D

Got a more "loop friendly" version with a different ending yet?

skids and triplem, thanks for the kind words.

chris (you cumfunneling lawyer), i don't have an ending yet. still taking any suggested ideas into consideration though. i spent a bit of time last night working on the lead vocal cause i think it has a lot of weaknesses in it that are core to my current vocal problems overall.

if you want, i can just post the bass track. that's pretty fun to listen to over and over. it's like having all of my favorite bass licks in one track!!!!

hey guernica, have you ever thought of putting together a bass guitar loop library? i'd certainly buy it.

....what a cool idea though, Im surprised I havent seen that here before. ...cool idea for a ....(i almost said challenge  :D )..... ...for a thread. Folks could get a few of their own specialty parts together and post em. .......some tasty acoustic runs from Jeff, some ebow parts from Sam, a few clean electric guitar progressions from crawdad.......... ...some sax riffs from Lt..... The list goes on. ...cool idea...

I never have anything important or significant to say ---Just wanted to say GREEAATT SSONNGG in all ways!

I thought I owed you a better review than I originally gave.

I love the song (still). Musically it's quite well written. Very melodic. Lyrically, it's ok. But I wasn't going "wow." Real smooth harmonies during the chorus. I love them. I like your voice. G-man works the bass real nice.

The stutter-starts on the guitar are ok. But in the intro they come off as a bit abrupt - just too much of a "stop" in them. They work fine elsewhere in the song. The acoustic sound is real warm and nice.

Little weirdness on the word "I'm" at about :40. Not sure about the lead vocal sort of delaying it's reentry at 2:27. It's a little uneven. That's a very minor thing.

I sort of like the ending. You expect a song like this to come to a nice orderly ending. And then you throw the listener a curve. I think I'd keep it (I might be the only one though). :D

Ok Guernica, I'll start the challenge by posting a bunch of washboard and spoon loops, and then handoff, etc, etc....LOL.

davelivinstone, welcome to the board. thanks for stopping by. try the veal. at this point, i'm completely sick of this song (except the bass guitar) so i might scrap it and start over with just the bass and build up from there.......just kidding.

trip, the ending kind of goes with the last phrase in the song but i doubt anyone would get that except me. i did have a lot of trouble with the vocal reentry at the end and just basically went with the take that made me puke the least rather than finding something that didn't make me puke. i'm so lazy

as for the guitar stops, that was kind of a scientific thing in a way. i started playing this rythm to see #1 if there was any hint of natural reverb in the room and #2 just how quiet the room was. then i wound up writing a song which in the end is so much more interesting and enjoyable than constructing and testing an isolation booth/torture chamber. i am, however, very pleased with the results of the construction. so back to writing music and hopefully i'll have more to post soon.

thanks for listening everyone. the comments are all very helpful and i wish i had as much time and energy as some of y'all who can turn around feedback in less than a year.

I really liked this song. Agreed that all this really needs is the fine touches already talked about. I do think I hear some pitchiness on the vocals in the chorus but that could be my imagination. I'm not sure if compression on the vocal was noted but it could use a bit as sometimes it gets too out front.

Nothing to say that hasn't already been said. Just had to say I like this lot. Flows very nicely. Fun to listen to. Love hearing G play bass. I too say that it could benefit from just a little bit of effects, but even if you go dry it's a fine piece of work.
