Hey. I WISH they did have a spoken word section at MP3.com...I REALLY do. You're correct. That's basically what it is.
Electronic, Ambient...trip hop??? Hmmmm??? I'm gonna take a listen.
Yeah, this "spoken word" style definitely reminds me of Trip-Hop. Though, the music is a little more like soft House.
A couple examples that come to mind are:
Rocker`s Hi-Fi "Going Under" on their Mish Mash disc. This song is absolutely amazing. Powerful, chilling and deeply beautiful, it sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it.

and
Tricky's "Getto Youth" on Pre-Millennium Tension.

You should also listen to some
Everything But The Girl.
http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserve...ography.html/ArtistID=EVERYTHING+BUT+THE+GIRL They do a lot of that soft House thing. "Wrong" on Walking Wounded is a good example.
and
Portishead http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserve...CDN/FIND/discography.html/ArtistID=PORTISHEAD Dummy is particularly good, but they can tend to get a little depressing.
Oh, and another very beautiful, powerful song is the title track fro
Massive Attack's "Protection" disc.
http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserve...FIND/discography.html/ArtistID=MASSIVE+ATTACK "Better Things" and "Sly" are also wonderful female vocal examples. "Angel" and "Teardrops" on Mezzanine are also incredible. And.... Well, let's just say ALL of Massive Attack's stuff is great!
I could go on and on, but I guess I'll stop now. These short clips obviously can't do any of this music full justice, so drop by the record store and give them a better listen.
From my brief listen, I think "Subway Song" and "Can't Sleep" are your strongest posts. I can imagine you heading into a similar deep and powerful electronic style as these artists I've listed above. Thanks for sharing.
