Here's the crux of the biscuit

You're on the right track, but not quite there - Playing the C major scale over a piece in G would be G mixolydian.

Playing the F major scale over C would be C mixolydian.

Best of luck with your harmonica playing - I've never been any good at the damn things!

I think I see the problem here: if you have the names of the modes on the tip of your tongue, you probably think too much to play the harp.

No offense: my stepson, an educated musician, can play anything on the guitar but the harmonica baffles him.

Long time harmonica player here.

Straight harp=use the same key harmonica
Blues harp=the four chord,example Gblues=Charp,Eblues=Aharp

There's also different scale harps, chromatic harps, low tuned and octave unison harps.
My personal favorite is the Hohner Special 20,but I've been buying the LeeOskars because they sell replacement reeds.I like the way both harps sond and bend, but an added bonus is that they have plastic combs which I notch with a razor in spots so I can feel with my tongue where I'm at on the scale.;)

Harmonicas do go out of tune and need to be replaced periodicaly.
