I am wanting to set up an efficient recording system. I have decided NOT to go with a full PC set-up, even though I have a more than adequate PC, but am looking at either a Fostex FD-8 or Fostex D-90 which is a rack mounted, dedicated 8 track recorder. I have a 12 channel mixer so that isn't a major problem. I will have to look at a suitable software package for final mix-down, editing and CD burning. My aim is to have a system that is able to record anything that I throw at it, and with time produce a CD of top demo quality. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
If you already have a mixer, buy the D-90 or the new D-108. I have the D-90 and it works great. Think about how many inputs you need, drum machines, etc. Are the inputs on the FD-8 enough for you? Will they be enough in the future? If doubtful, go with hard-disc recording with a separate mixer. Hope this helps.
