Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - WE HAVE A WINNER!

Hey guys, here's a song I started about 6 months ago that just never got finished. I kind of lost interest with it because I couldn't come up with any lyrics and I don't really like it that much anyway right now. I might finish it one of these days.

In the meantime, if you wanna play with some real drum tracks, have at it. There's also bass, 4 rhythm tracks, and 3 lead tracks......and cowbell! No vocals. Feel free to add your own if you want.

16 raw tracks total. Grab em, make your best mix, and post it in here. I know how I want it to sound, but do whatever you want with it. I'll listen to and judge each mix. Winner gets a free copy of my upcoming album.

Well, I did a quick mix of it now... I have a story behind this one. So my dad was recording a song, and he likes everything loud. He had my monitors turned all the way up, bass boost and everything. He also had the Line In all the way up too. The mic was plugged in and it was next to my monitors. I turn on my monitors and feedback decides to blow my tweeters out! I was like :eek:
So this mix was done with headphones and computer speakers. I went back and forth to compare the two. Let me know if something sounds REALLY bad. If anything is a problem, it's probably going to be the lows and maybe mids.

Any way you could upload to something other than megaupload? I am trying to snag it but its going sluggishly slow, and then the download dies. :(

I managed to download it. Got to 50%, then slowed right down to a crawl. Things they'll do to encourage you to pay for their service.

Sounds great as ever Greg. Got some ideas for some lyrics, but putting lyrics to music is not my strong point, so might take a while. We'll see how it goes. Should be a good exercise to expand my comfort zone. Thanks for the opportunity though.
 
Sorry guys. I'll upload again to another site. Megaupload has always worked well for me so I thought it would be fine. :o

Hmm, sorry squib, that mix aint gonna work. The drums are buried and the overheads are too loud. The guitars are thick, but there's not much seperation. It's like all guitar and drum overhead. Keep trying. :)

Will there be a biased opinion for mixes with vocals against those without? Or is it just your tracks that count?

I'm just listening for the backing tracks. Do vocals if you want, but it's not gonna sway me one way or the other unless they're terrible and/or don't play well in the mix.

That's what I like to hear. I suck at vocals and really am not arsed recording 'em :D

When's the "closing date" of Gerg Idol? :laughings:

I dunno. Whenever the thread seems to lose steam. I'd like to hear a variety of mixes, but you never know. Mix contests used to rule the roost in here, but interest seems to have died down considerably since the french took over and a lot of the old regulars have faded away and been replaced with one post look-at-me n00bs.

I was gonna suggest one recently.

There was talk of one a while back, but it wasn't really a contest of mixing. It was "upload whatever you want"... so 1) there's no proof that you mixed it, and 2) it's not only a mix, it's recording and song style

This, however, is what I had in mind.
