My band practices in my one car garage. I see alot of help on how to lower the sound leaving the garage buy building faux walls, but this is NOT an option to me. I MUST keep the garage door functional. Now neighbors called cops and I got ticket. Any ideas. The entire garage has been insulated and the garage door has been replaced with an insulated one....

That sounds about right. Extra layer of drywall also.

rule number one, don't practice at odd times of the night. during the afternoon when people are working or not asleep is the best as it causes less frustration.
but assuming you're doing that and people are still being bitchy about it (I've been through that too)...you may try and see what the law states bout the minimum SPL level that would be considered a nuisance. Then buy an SPL meter and see how loud you really are off your property. I've known a guy who did just this for a local bar he was engineering at. They kept getting complaints from some lady down the street and he eventually proved to the cops that he was not above the limit stated in the city law and they couldn't do anything about it.

Of course, none of this may work for you because your city might not have any such laws in effect with specifics and/or the cops might just be the ones that will make the decision on it.....or the fact may be that you're already way too loud.

In that case you need to find another place to practice or spend the money, research and time on isolating your studio. But this will be expensive and can require an extensive amount of construction. Start here:

Neither you, Massive Master, nor you, bennychico11 must have ever been in a band.

Band practice is a horrible thing to endure if you're not part of it, and trying to save money by using the folks garage is only going to get you so far.

EVERY major city has commercial spaces devoted to band practice use. There you can make all the noise you want at any time of the day or night. There may be bands that the management of the rehearsal space know of who want to share time in a rehearsal room bringing the cost down to a very workable level.

Here in Chicago where rehearsal space is relatively expensive, a four piece band splitting both the space and the rent can get away with as little as $50 a month. boogieman481's parents would probably be willing to pay the first 6 months rent on a practice space just to get some peace and quiet...

The cheapest here is $50 for 5 hours! And the place is scungy!

And you must be young - You're from Chicago, right?
http://www.massivemastering.com/special/LaneyAd.jpg - Probably the loudest band in Chicago. Those amps were "stupid" loud - We even designed the first "De-Stupidifer" which was basically a passive and unbuffered "power soak" so we could turn the amps down *below zero*

Oh, the sound guys we pissed off with those things... :D

And here's one with (another HomeRec contributor) Farview (he's on the right) - Same band, even louder amps...
http://www.massivemastering.com/special/LaneyAd2.jpg

BTW - Jason actually designed the circuitry for the original De-Stupidifier...

I'm all over rehearsal spaces - I know of several overly-grungy places with bad security all over the area.

I don't know where the guy is from. I have no idea whether there are rehearsal studios like Ranger or what not in his area. But if he wants to try to temper the sound coming from his garage, it's not impossible - Been there - Done that.

It's not going to be silent by any means - But if it keeps the peace in his neighborhood, that might be his only option. I assume that he's given thought to rehearsal spots by now.

Sometimes an obvious solution is overlooked. Try setting your gear up differently, back of the amps to the door, sound pointed at the back of the garage. Remember you are practicing, not putting on a concert, lower your volume a little, if your ears "ring" after a practice session then you were too loud.

temperature controlled tempoary storage is whats popular here in columbus... you also get pretty good security...

Well i am 24 and own my own house... so the parents aren't an issue... the wife.. (she loves the music, just wants to keep the garage intact) When the cops wrote me a ticket it was at 2 pm on a sunday afternoon... we dont practice after dark to try and avoid making the neighbors mad...didnt really work i guess...both my amp and my bass players amps have are facing AWAY from the garage door... and we dont practice that loud... Its a one car garage and if we turned up we would kill our hearing... we just match levels with the drummer... (I have a marshall TSL 100 and the drive is on volume level 1.6 for those that know the amp) as far as i understand, the cops don't have to take an SPL reading... i was told if they can hear it from the street, they can write a ticket... i am going talk to the judge today to see if i can get out of it and to verify this.... My house is brick and the sound doesn't seem to really pass through the sides of the house where the brick is... only the garage door... Jam rooms in my area cost around $200 a month..really more than i want/can spend.... and after i have spent so much time and money on my garage, i really hate to walk away in defeat

dude, if you have your own house then practice inside of it. send the wife shopping for an hour or two and jam away.

We used to practice inside my living room... and the noise was better... but now we practice 3 times a week..an average of 4 hours... and its much easier to leave everything set up

not in a garage band persay, but I've been a musician who practices in his apartment. I've had some neighbors complain about it, and others who approach me to tell me how nice it is to hear me playing. You get both sides of the fence with this issue. Most likely if the people are not approaching him, they're neighbors who don't know him or have other issues about him. That's how it was with me too.

And practice rooms are not that easy to get. Like he said, prices can be up to $200 a month and the ones in my city are 30min. north of where I live.

boogieman481-
Sorry to hear about this man. Doing some research some cities have actual SPL levels, others say if it can be heard 200 feet away it's too loud...and others don't really define what is a nuisance.
So I guess it's either practice in the house if that has remedied the issue before, do some construction work on the garage or find some other band member's house.

Or, go around to each of your neighbors house and see if you can cut a deal with them. Certain times of day for only a set time....they might be much more likely to work with you on this issue if you talk to them face to face about it (with a smile...). Like I said, it's probably some neighbors you don't know who just think there are some punk kids playing loud music next door. Be a good neighbor and approach them about it and invite them to come over and tell you when you are playing too late or too loud. Maybe someone has a sleeping baby next door.

i have to agree with this. talk to your neighbors and make peace with them. if you approach them respectfully, chances are you can work out a deal. i build engines and work on drag cars out of my house. when tuning them, i usually take them somewheres else, but occasionally i have to fire off an uncorked 800 hp beast in my driveway. yall may be loud, but i doubt youre as loud as a race engine at 7000 rpms much less at idle. ive had to butter up my neighbors and theyre always cool about me making some noise sometimes. just dont be obnoxious or stupid about it. hell, you can even organize a 'block party' type thing and invite your neighbors over to listen to yall jam. theyll probably think its pretty cool and youll probably get a little closer to their good side.

ALL bands start as 'garage bands'. Using that as a 'persay' pejorative just proves my point.

Oh i have talked to them all... with a friendly face... most of them compliment us and say they enjoy... a few even come over and listen when we play... one lady that lives across teh street from me is A SHERIFF...and she doesnt complain.... i have my guess as to who has called to cops on us and i have apologized to them before and talked to them very friendly and they still deny everything....
Just talked to the people at the courthouse and they said the cop has to take a SPL reading (which he didnt).... so... i have to go to court now....

Why John!

I never would've suspected!

Looking GOOD!

I was way into hating metal and loving punk rock back in the day --- I've kinda recovered some equilibrium over the years...

How did you keep your hearing intact so that you can master as well as you do?

yeah definitely fight it. the shop where we dyno motors has an asshole neighbor that always calls the cops. the dyno is muffled though, and the cops take sound readings, but we're always under the max decibel levels. hell, the cars passing by on the street are louder than our dyno.
