after writing the ticket, the cop told me "tell your boys to start up again, i want you to come out here and hear how loud you are"... so i did... and if i had to guess....we were about 50 feet away and it was about half as loud as a mower...

ALL bands start as 'garage bands'. Using that as a 'persay' pejorative just proves my point.

then apparently you've never been a classical musician or played in a jazz band

because not all bands play in garages nor do all bands play the style of music you do.
nor does everyone have a garage

Well if it was Half as Loud as a Mower then when you are Jamming Go outside and start up your Lawn Mower....LOL

I"v been lucky with most of my Bands in the Fact that the Jam space was usually in the Basement of a Party House were either all the neighbours were friends or they were deathly affraid to do anything about the noise for fear of there Pets being eaten by these Crazy Punks ....lol

Also luckilly the noise bylaw here is only in effect from 11pm to 6am.....

Cheers

Ok... i have been a classical musician... and played in a jazz band for years... but for right now i am in a ROCK band that practices in my GARAGE... so can anyone offer advice that would help me...

You are getting paying gigs. $200 a month is chicken feed compared to soundproofing anything (which will involve an elevated floor, and double-wall, box-in-a-box construction). Heck, in my neck of the woods, a drum room, or a half of a shared rehearsal space runs $200 at a minimum.

get that SPL meter to find out exactly how loud you are. Of course, that won't prove anything of how loud you were at the time...but you could tell the judge that you have taken an average reading and you register a n dBSPL. Here's a list of ordinances of some towns/cities/counties that might help you...not sure where you live:

btw, my comment earlier wasn't directed towards you

i dont need it sound proofed.... i cant really sound proof it without getting rid of the door... i just need some suggestions to lower the level leaving the door

i know it wasnt directed toward me... im just trying to find answers to my problem....

Why John!

I never would've suspected!

Looking GOOD!

I was way into hating metal and loving punk rock back in the day --- I've kinda recovered some equilibrium over the years...

How did you keep your hearing intact so that you can master as well as you do?
.
Not looking like that anymore - Those shots are around 10 and 14 years old.

But I used to take pretty good care of the hearing thingies - Vox only in the monitors, amps faced for the stage mix and some wonderful ear plugs.

well, then you could take a look at absorbtion material. 703 rigid fiberglass is a favorite as it absorbs low frequncies really well (which is probably what is traveling to the neighbors' house). You might be able to build some movable baffles with the fiberglass on them and place them against the garage door when needed. Might help absorb some of the sound going out the garage. Several 8 foot tall ones maybe?
The concrete floor probably could use something...maybe something as cheap as area rugs that you can easily remove.

we have carpet laid on top of the concrete floor right now

Without a raised floor, decoupled from the concrete, the bass freq's will spread out through the ground to the surrounding area, and you're piddling into the wind. The most cost-effective thing to try is to fill the drums with foam, through a t-shirt over each cymbal, and turn everything else down.

I have had simular problems in the past. It is usually a neighbor that thinks peace and quiet is "their" right not taking in to consideration anything else.

I would try some sort of portable/movable wall in front of the garage door. I have seen wall panels of hard insulation that were consrtucted in small sections (3-4 feet wide) and moved in front of the door while practicing. It isn't a 100% effective method but it should cut down on the outside noise level.

BTW I have a Laney AOR Tube Lead head and it is absolutely awesome! I don't use it live anymore but for recording Ahhhhh! ;)

have your neighbors wacked.

they're dicks, and there's not much else to do about that.

seriously.

the first thing i said to the last neighbor that moved in next to me was.

"just so you know, i'm noisy and there will come a day when you ask me to turn it down, and i won't"

but i never make noise after dark, and live outside of town so i have a legal leg to stand on.
as it appears, you may not.

i live in a small country town... with no police force... all we have is the county sheriffs office... so you are partially right... if the information that i got today is correct, then all i have to do is be below 85 decibels standing at the road in front of my house... which is very do able... i may already be below that when we practice

jamb sharpened #2 pencils into your neighbors ears. they have to be #2 though.

The cops will still come and issue a citation if the neighbors complain- it's not their job to adjudicate. You can appear to fight the citation and you will prevail if you are not breaking any specific ordinance.

However, there may be a nonspecific overarching ordinance which says something like:

"..shall not impinge upon the rights of occupants to quiet enjoyment of their homes." or something along those lines.

So you may be fucked.

I reccomend you contact your city code enforcement folks and ask them about how to proceed.

When I went to the courthouse they printed me the definition of "noise" for my precinct and the law they said I had broken. I am trying to get in touch with a lawyer friend of mine to make sure I won't get alot of fines. But, even though my neighbors didn't have the guts to come talk to me, I still have no desire to disturb their peace and quiet.
