I have a computer that came with Vista installed....I want to clean it off and install XP. my mother board is a ECS MCP61P-AM ( http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006203R/4006203Rmv.shtml ) I know this will probably void my Gateway warranty but thats not an issue....

computer specs are : Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ 2.10 Ghz with 2 gb RAM.

I was told by a friend that I will have to have XP motherboard drivers after installing XP. I have an account with Driversagent.com which lets me log on and scan computers and update drivers.....are the drivers going to be a huge issue or can I just install XP and use my Driversagent account to update drivers?

I can't find the MCP612 on the ECS web page. The closet model is MCP55M-A.

Either Gateway is bullshitting you on the model number, or this motherboard was built exclusively for Gateway.

If you don't want to use Vista, you might as well try installing XP. Odds are you'll find all the drivers you need on the internet or Windows Update.

Yeah Windows update should provide hardware drivers if you don't have them. Of course it won't surprise me if MS stop supplying them eventually to force people into quitting XP. Probably when they release their next botched (p)OS.

Windows 7

My latest edition of Maximum PC magazine, the editors spoke of MS latest demonstration of its newest OS due out in 2009, called Windows 7 (presently). They said they were underwhelmed.

so install XP and install my updates and you guys think ill be good to go huh???

that sounds great....sounds like a weekend project...

thanks...

You might want to write down the name of your network card and other info in case XP doesn't have a driver for it...this happened to me before...but it is rare since XP has generic drivers also.

Kind of hard to search for drivers when your internet isn't working. :D

Gateway uses ECS mobos! That pretty much insures I'm never going to buy from them!

Basically try downloading the motherboard drivers from the manufacturers website.

The order of installation should be as bellow:

Os/disk drivers
Mother board drivers
Graphic drivers
Sound drivers
Windows Update
Other aps

Do not go on the net after reinstalling, have everything ready to install and when installing disconnect the network cable since the unupdated XP will help you get some nasty stuff from the net.
Once everything is installed that has to be then put a firewall on and disallow everything you can appart from windows update and untill you get everything including SP 3 do not start with anything net related.

In general if you want a pc, build it yourself or get a small company to do it. I would not buy anything from any company that offers ready systems unless it would be a very very trusted company.
You can always get a mac, this is what i did after my XP xeon workstation died on me. Now i have 8 cores instead of 4 and a working OS.

Windows is really good for games and office work but if you want to have a workstation for music or graphics i honestly recommend a mac.

Cheers,
BP
