Favorite vox mic

The NTK and NT5s are really the best Mics I have. The NTK usually sounds better, but I've found the NT5 sounds a little better for some voices. Particularly with singers with higher chest voices. Also the room might make a difference. If the room is too live the NT5 doesn't pick up as much of the reverb of the room. But I've only really recorded a few singers, usually just for demos, so take that for what it's worth. I'll have my high end mics someday. But that's what I have for now. Oh sometimes I like the sound of an SM57 over both of those. Mostly because it seems to add a little more power or growl or something like that. Actually the last demo I did of my band, I set up both the NTK and the NT5 and the NT5 actually seemed to sound a little better. (My singer is the one with the higher chest voice.) My mic technique may have been bad though.

Edit:
http://www.fromtheshadowsmusic.com/music.html . I recorded the vocal using an NT5 on the "Profordable Recordings". All I have up are lo-fi though, the hi-fi seem to come out little screwy and scrambled.

Hey man, that's cool. Good on you for experimenting - I frankly would not even consider putting an SDC on vox any more (an sonic disaster involving a friend and a C1000S has put me off for life). Good on you for using your ears too. :)

Studio Projects T3
Marshal V69M
ADK TL
Groove Tubes GT-44
EV RE-15
I want to get a Shure SM7, too.
I don't have anything fancier than these, but they will get the job done.

really depends on singer. i use an nt2 alot with good results on female or soft spoken male. i tend to do alot of loud singers so i fall back to dynamics alot to try and tame the airy harshness a screamer can have. re20, 57, ot this werid little cb radio looking thing get pretty good takes off loud people.
if you handed me 500$ and told me to buy a vox mic or 2 i might get a bably bottle or a gt66 with cash to get one of those nady ribbons left over mabye.

Virtually all the lead vocals at Chess Records between 1966 thru 1972 were cut on an EV RE15 or EV 666. Also tons at at RCA (like Elvis') and Atlantic
(like Aretha's).

IMHO the "RE's" (including RE20), offer tremendous versatility on a variety of singers. Another one which often sounds great is the EV 635a omni BTW.

In any case, a strong AE can get an excellent vocal out of ANY good mic, like a '57.

How about the differences to your ears between an EV RE20 and a AT 4050?

Hey Kenny, I know you have the NTK and the 4050...would you mind giving me a quick comparison/contrast of the two.

I have the NTK, but I heard the 4050 being used the other day on acoustic guitar and vox, and was extremely impressed...very natural sounding and still really present. I'm looking to add something that would complement, and the 4050 would be easier on my budget than some of the other mics I was looking into.

Thanks.

I have a 414, so something that has a different sound than that would be preferable. I was thinking maybe a NTK, but other suggestions are welcome for up to about 1k.

I'd love something that could be good for some deep male vocals.
