So I've been reading a bit more up on the technical side of how The Beatles recorded their songs, and a popular mic that they used all the time is the AKG D19. It's only been talked about in the last decade, I don't remember anybody really bringing this mic up in the 2000's/early 2010's (and reading forum threads from back then, they were noticeably cheaper than they are now, reflecting on how less well-known they were).

Now I'm not interested in the D19 per se, or a clone of the D19 (Warm Audio makes one, but I listened to a mic shoot out video and the Warm clone was noticeably worse sounding, way harsher highs), but I am interested in a sort of "modern equivalent" to the D19, that has a similar use case and similar sound. For those that don't know, the D19 was basically the SM57 of the 1960's, it was super common and was used on virtually any source imaginable (Geoff Emerick used the D19 on toms, hi-hats, and drum overheads, for example). Now you can say "Why don't you just use the SM57 then?" but the 57's have that upper mid boost that the D19's lack. The D19's have a much smoother sound to them.

Doing a bunch of forum research, a mic that came up a lot was the Beyer M88. A mic definitely worth looking into, but I gotta wait for a really good used deal before I pull the plug on it. Any other suggestions? I've also heard the RE20, but I already own an RE20, and while it would be cool to have two, for the money I'd rather get a different mic with a different color to it.
