I've found a secret - with nearly all synths everyone says their presets suck. So to stay truly original - go with the presets, noone else uses them...

...uh, yeah, sure, dudeman...
I can appreciate good sarcasm, though...;)

I'm very new to synths as well...but from what I have seen NI does an amazing job. Absynth (which I know is more than a synth) is incredible as well as the B4 and Pro-53...those two are endless hours of fun for me.

I'm going to check out some of the others mentioned on the list though. I just downloaded Crystal.

I've got a little analogue thing in my VST folder called 'Scorpion' which has some awesome preset bass sounds. I always dig it out if I need to beef up a dancey track.

I'm not sure who makes it though...probably a small software house.

Question for all of you synth users...... Im a newb to synth programming; what exactly makes each softsynth or any synth period sound different from each other when they all have the same controls and use the same sin, saw, etc. sample? Most have the same LFO and filter types also. What makes each one so special? Why cant you just buy one with enough options and make the same sounds you would in another one. I hear the difference in FM synthesis and analog, but why have 4 analog synths?

Well, they don' uset EXACTLY the same algorithm to produce the sound. Neither the same algorithm to control their envelopes. I couldn't say some is better than another, it just sounds different. for example:

"Synth A sounds much better, but it's CPU hog, while synth B is fairly good and it's more CPU friendly".

Other factor is how tight their envelopes actualy control the sound. It's like different Q factor on EQ, etc. You got the idea, eh ? :)

BTW, usualy I'd rather use sampler (Giga, VSampler, Sampletank, Soundfonts, etc) than softsynth, but I'm happy with Edirol Orchestra, RGC Z3ta+, DR-008 and B4.

Same here, sounds alot more distinct. Thank you also for clearing up my synth question :) Cheers!

I will give my vote to reFX Vanguard. It sounds really good. There are many other good synths in NI Reaktor Session, PH Reason (Malström). Also I like GMedia Oddity and Arturia Moog Moular V. From free stuff the SYNTH1 and Crystal are very good.

Hum I like all the good ones, lol. Absynth does rock, it sounds just as good if not better then my old ex5! Also Albino is rocking, crystal and rhino are fun. I really like compressors that are software too, they really add to the music so much more.

In reality any of the new softsynths that are commerically sold rock the equilvant of most hardware. I want a damn virus softsynth, I guess I have to get a powercore element just to have it!

Anyone try the soundart chameleon synths? What about the synths on the uad-1 or the powercore? I hate having to not run the effects live if I want to make changes later. Kyma is the best "softsynth" though, used by lucas arts to make the new star wars movies sound effects!

www.symbolicsound.com makes kyma

FM7, Absynth, Reaktor

FM7 and Pro-53 simply rock. Pro53 has some nice pads and fat leads, whereas FM7 has that DX-7 sound! there's a tines in DX7 that i think they didnt include in FM7. :-( i miss that and expected it....

Absynth : hmm..no softsynth can come close to this one (except Reaktor, Tassman, z3ta+ i guess) the patch programming is very very flexible and the sound effects/ambience stuff is great. cool for pads and leads too...my vote No.2!

in organ, Charlie and B4 win. In EP, i dunno.Probably Scarbee RVP73. Reason rocks too. i need to figure it out though.....

the Hartman Neuron VS is the best softsynth i've heard.

i'm about to spend $900 on it for that futuristic sound, am i crazy??

any softsynths that compare???

I like NI's Battery 2. I've only had for a month now, but the flexibility with the drums sounds and the EQ filtering and comperession capabilities are pretty impressive. Not to mention it comes with 3.5 GB of completely tweakable drum samples. The layout looks good too.
