Ive been to the Ozark mountains lately and Ive picked up a kit to make my own dulcimer. Mine is different though As Ive only ordered the neck and bridge and the hardware.

I have since purchased a 1.5" thick piece of maple and aquired a tele neck pickup. The glue is drying on it now and tommorow Ill get to play it. It looks really cool now.

Anyone else buy or build one of these?

I guess dulcimers arent very popular arround here.

Ive been running it trough my multieffects and using a slide to get alot of great sounds out of this unique Instrument.

i hear ya

yeah
i run my banjo through a fuzz box digital delay for a lot of cool effects.
i'm getting an electric mandolin soon, can't wait to try that.
how much was your kit?

mountain or hammered?
My company sold the regular three string type in the past and I've played the dulcimer a little bit.
What is your woodworking background?Sounds like a fun project though.Maybe you can post a sound sample after you get it all ready...

I build a bunch a loooong time ago. There was a fair about of "oops..." involved, as I recall. But they are interesting instruments and really wake up if you set them on a table to play, instead of your lap.

My kit was about 39.00 ( the body that was with it was cardboard). So I knew I needed to get rid of that.

You are right about the table thing It fattens It up quite a bit.

I have been useing my bass prossesor and my gt2. the korg bass ax1b has an aqua patch on it that gives it a rad sound.

Mines a mountain type, I have also been looking for a banjo. and have found a manjo ( a bastard son of a banjo and a mandolin) at musicians friend. 39.00. Ive picked them up and tried them and I can get them to sound good.

darrin, can you post a link to this instrument on MF's site? That sounds very cool at that price and I am also interested. I have scoured the MF website and have come up empty. I also went through the most recent hard copy catalog I got from them and zilcho. Do you know the brand name?

Thanks,
Brad

Thats the one. I live near the distributership, and they have a clearance center there. everything is dirt cheap, they are returns of course but easily fixed.

I thought dulcimers were what Tide put in detergent to put life back in colors?

It's nice to see someone else has tried the dulcimer. I have a five string Mountain Dulcimer. I use an old contact microphone on it called an "IT' made by the Frap company. It attaches to the dulcimer using a piece of beeswax.

With a little reverb the dulcimer has a very haunting sound.

Regards...

Add chorus+reverb and you get a Midevil feel. Try a pitch effect if you have a harmonizer. Its way cool.

Thanks for the idea with the harmonizer. I will give it a try on the Lexicon and the TCE. With a slight flange it should sound like a sitar.

I tried it too

I had a cheap box one...bought it as an experiment...I liked it...but wasn't quite used to it, so I let it go when I moved.

I've seriously considered retuning a piece of crap acoustic guitar so I can get 3-4 strings like the dulcimer...but I suppose the thing to do is just go buy a good one and get to work.
