can anyone suggest a moderately priced drum mic kit? i know most of ya ll frown on them here for some reason, but ive HEARD excellent results with some. (though i do plan on using my 57 as a snare mic)

ATM25 and a pair of 012s will probably do better for you than any drum mic kit, especially since you already have a 57 for your snare.

That's 150 to 300 dollars, right?

How about:

Shure SM57: free
Audio Technica ATM25: $140
2 x Studio Projects B1s: $160
Total: $300 (plus postage)

thanks guys. so you find generally unnessecary to mic the toms? think the OH's will be enough?

If you have the overheads placed properly and they sound good, you shouldn't have a need for tom mics at this point. I would go with these suggestions, and then maybe pick up a few Sennheiser e609 Silvers for toms later on.

Also, I think that most drum mic packages don't include OH mics, which are an integral part to drum recording. I think most are geared more towards live sound, where overheads aren't used nearly as much.

Don't forget about stands and cables...

Add another $100 or so for some good ones.

Yo Jaeden. Here's my .02 worth. You are making a classic drum mic mistake, being the idea that large numbers of cheap mics will sound better than small numbers of good mics. In your price range, you will get better sound with 4 good mics than 6 or 8 bad ones. You already have a 57, so snare is covered. What you need is a good kick drum mic and 2 overheads. That's *all* you need.
Of course, your best bet would be to snipe this stuff on ebay, but I'm only going to list equipment with online availability and new prices. I'm using 8thstreet.com prices, but you might do a little better if you look around. The cheapest kick mic that works seems to be AT PRO25, $69.95. Better choices would be ATM25, $139.00, AKG D112 or Audix D-6, $199.00. For overheads, it's really hard to beal Marshall Electronics MXL 603s for the price, $72.95 each. For $199.95, you can have the matched pair with the airline case and the shockmounts. Probably in your price range, I'd go for the ATM25 and 603's, or AT Pro25 and the matched pair of 603's. As I said above, I would probably be hunting them down on ebay, rather than paying full price. I believe that those 3 mics, plus your 57, will render better sound than any drum mic kit under $300. Just get 3 good mics.-Richie

You couldn't get better advice than what Richie is giving you now. Please don't make the "lots of mics" mistake. Get stuff that you won't sell ... you'll only add to them later with more quality.

thanks guys. ive taken the advice to heart. definately smarter to have a few great mics than alotta crappy ones!

For Kick, take a look at the often over-looked Sennheiser e602 - you will never want another kick drum mic again. I was very, very impressed.

just for fun, what do you guys think of the cad mics, and audix also?

I've never used any of the CAD mics, though I've heard some mildly positive things about the CAD kick drum mic. As far as the Audix mics, if you're talking about the D6 ... I have it and have used it to great success. I don't know anything about any of the others. The D6 is pretty well documented on this board. Do some searches. I think for 2 letter words, you've got to type in, for example, D6*
