I also have the grace m1o1..so I can tell you..If you want to save money..and if you are using a daw...why buy a compressor? use plugins..there is no need to compress on the way in!!
PS.If you are looking for "A Sound" why would you want FMR's sound anyway...go for UA..or api..something that is known for it's "SOund"
I've just been reading so many good things about FMR that I want to experience it. From the larger than life RNP sound, to the RNC's "Super Nice" mode being so accurately clean & transparent. Then there's the "gooey" characteristic the RNLA adds to the sound. I don't want to experience it all just because I want the best sound, but because I have never owned any of these types of products so I want to understand first hand what people are talking about. Back in 1998 when I was writing PC songs, there weren't really any affordable products. I was using a Digitech GSP 2101, DBX 286a, an AKG C-3000 for my voice, & a 300mhz Sony Vaio with the Mod Tracker "Fast Tracker 2" & Cool Edit Pro for the music. That stuff alone cost me around $2100.
Now that I've started writing songs again, I've racked up the same debt as I did back in the day, but now my vocals don't sound like a hissing, muddy mess. They sound better than I would have imagined achievable in the privacy of my own undampened, acoustically unsound garage. And it sounds better than ever to me.
I would never purchase software based effects because I cannot afford it. At least hardware has as good a resale value as my patience allows. So although I may not be able to afford to keep most of it, I have been given the chance through the miracle that is Ebay to at least give it a try.
As for a "sound", my future definitely has a place for something like a Great River NV1. an Avalon & Apogee's Mini Series may replace my transparent setup one day.
Oh and I've wanted an AKG 414 since 1998. As I mentioned before, I could only afford an AKG C3000 at that time. Coincidentally I'm still in the same predicament.
