Thanks for the replys guys, it seems to have become somewhat heated over here. To clear some things up, I'm not marketing anything, just looking for advice/opinions on a subject that i'm still learning about, like many if not all of us.
Now, looking back on my responce to falkens initial reply, I stand by it although it may seem harsh, as i'd not expect to be patronised like that in real life, and this guy has obviously got a stick up his arse for whatever reason and feels like taking it on on someone over the internet.
"and you have 'wee' boxes? do you keep those next to the bed?"
Eh..what? Maybe i dont understand your sense of humour mate, but if this was meant to be a light hearted 'joke' as opposed to a really weak put-down, then i appologise for branding you as a lady part.
Also, maybe i got the wrong impression of you due to the fact that you seem to have a problem with a product that i dont think i've read one negative review about, on the internet or in any respected music publication.
Thanks for your reply fraser (and for understanding where i was coming from), thats sorta cleared things up a bit more...I guess its more a limiter i'm after. The reason i started looking into getting an outboard compressor was to avoid clipping in say an acoustic track, where you wanted to perform all parts of the song together as opposed to tracking the guit, then the vox seperately. If there is a part of the song, mainly when going into a middle eight or a solo when your getting into the groove and the volume increases more than u anticipated, and this results in the signal clipping, it can ruin the track. ...
(Just read over your post again 60s Guy, i think this was the point you were making right? Falken seems to think the opposite however "I would not compress just to avoid digital clipping. if you want to avoid clipping, turn down the gain. compression is used to alter the sound, much like eq"
Clipping can be avoided by turning the gain down, or thinking about mic technique more, but i reckon this sort of thing takes away from the performance when the level on the meters is constantly in the back of your head.
Falken - Music is about opinion and point of view, as is the way we record it, but to be honest if opinion is forced on someone with little jusification and a whole lot of attitude, i tend to not care for it.
mr.rich - I'll get a link to a few tracks if you'd care to listen, i'd appreciate any comments you'd have to how i'd benifit from having a compressor in the signal chain.
Puffin - I've been recording for about 5 years, and everything i've bought ive researched to the max, as being Scottish limits your ability to part with your money somewhat. I suppose my question was somewhat vague however, but i didnt force anyone to reply, so suit yourself, if you dont want to contribute then thats cool.
Eddie - Thanks for the reply man, i'll look into those cables you mentioned, ive been using 1/4" guitar leads for most connections with what i consider good results, but if i was to get more outboard gear, i was thinking these may be a bit overkill length wise.
Thanks for all the other replys. I'll get some tracks up soon for anyone that wants to listen, or for anyone that just wants to know that im not marketing something
Cheers
