i've been using horrible cheap mics for so long that i'm almost getting used to how flat and dull they sound... but, sadly, i've got to part ways with them and spend some money on more real mics. a question, though. could part of the problem be that i'm not using any mic preamps? i've used a tascam porta03mkii, a sony mdm-x4, and now i'm using a akai dps16 all with similar results... should i be using a preamp with them? my main problem is the quality of vocals. also, to plug in some mics into 1/4 jacks i've been using xlr to 1/4 trs converters - could this be lowering sound quality? if so, it seems a decent preamp could also help resolve this.

I think you'll hear the biggest improvements with better mics rather than preamps right now. A good preamp won't make a shitty mic sparkle, but a good mic through the pres on the Akai should sound fine until you get a couple good outboard boxes to use as well.

Have fun shopping!

The Akai has preamps, and more cheap pres won't make it any better. A mic upgrade is a cheaper option than a really good pre. I'd say, get a Shure SM57, a workhorse dynamic for about $80, and a good cheap condenser, such as MXL V67B or a Studio Projects B-1, also about $80. Later on, go to a better pre, such as RNP, VTB-1, or VC1Qcs. Then upgrade to a really nice condenser or 2, then upgrade to killer preamps, then upgrade the recorder! This is like a 5 year process that goes in stages as the money becomes available. Your next step appears to be a couple of basic, affordable mics.-Richie
