DMT 8 vl Questions

I have just bought a used DMT 8vl with manual

(1) When I use the ERASE function, it will only erase in real time, meaning that a 3 minute recording takes 3 minutes to erase.
The CUT function is instant.
I find this odd on a digital machine, is there a trick to making the erase instant?

(2) The machine was originaly purchased new, soon after they first came out (almost 5 years ago) so I assume it has the Version 1 OS chip in it. How can I find out which version it is?.

(3) I hear you can buy an updated OS chip from Fostex.
What improvements did they make?

Thanks

Ped.

Hey Ped,The difference that I know of is 5 programs older, 9 programs newer....I have both and the differences are not noticeable other than that...if you can try useing a board with it and bypass the DTM board you would be surprised how much better your resultes will be...Good luck

Use a mixing board instead of the mixing board that it comes with ..They mention it in the manual..In the back of the machine there are 8 tape outs those can go out to a mixing board to monitor/mix...and you have 2 tape ins that is how you "feed" the recorder section..You can do that with a stand alone mic pre or from a buss in your mixer..the better pres and Eq of say a 8 channel Mackie or similar board will be better than the mixer that comes with it...Look in the manual for a detailed diagram for hook up..Good luck

I get you, I was'nt sure if you were talking about a digital mixer or some add on board. I do have a Mackie 1202 VLZ and I'll try it.
The reason I went to 8 track was because I was tired of MIDI & computer recording, (a real insperation killer) and I wanted something quick & simple, so I bought a Tascam Porta 414, a great little machine but tape.
The DMT, dispite being a lot bigger and having a Manule written by a 9 year old, fits the bill perfectly.
I paid $450 Canadian for it, up here in Vancouver BC, about $287 US dollars, so I think I got a bit of a steal.
I have a feeling that the prices may even go up on this machine if the trend towards all digital controls becomes the norm.
I think people prefer knobs.
Anyway I'm delited with it.
Thanks for your help Don
Have a great holiday and New Year.
Cheers, Ped
