since the DMP2 gives such a hot level....i find that it sometimes "overloads" the mic without clippin on the computer...

in otherwords, it gets distorted while recording whatever it is recording, and turning up the gain just sets the limit to a higher number.

for example, if it is distorted - and not passing -4db on my computer vu meter...and i turn up the preamp, it just is still distorted, but gets louder (say, -2db now)...

how can i be sure i get the loudest i can, without getting ANY distortion or "clipping" from the mic?

for the kick drum, i have to use a -10db pad to compensate for this. otherwise i get very unusable results.

i dont know, just something that i'm new too (my shitty beheringer 802a mixer i guess didnt have this problem because it was a mixer, not solely a preamp (and a bad one at that!))! haha..

oh yeah! and, i'm using a 1000mA power supply instead of a suggested 500mA

is this a severe problem?

the DMP2 is famous for that.....the DMP3 addressed that problem.....

you are on the right track using a pad.....a 10db pad is pretty mild for that pre, maybe a 20 or 30 would help more.......

well shit, ha.

so is there a way, besides with the use of pads, to get around this? Or do i need to go buy a 20 db pad now? haha.

if i'm doing some recording WITHOUT a pad, how can i make sure that it is not "overloading"?

You just have to go by ear and use some common sense.

If you're micing drums or very dynamic voices (basically anything loud), then use the pad.

Shure makes a switchable pad that goes from -15db to -25db. I have like 5 or 6 of them. Saved my ass on many occasion. They're a prerequisite when using that particular pre.
