What is not in question is that with the exception of one other person, everyone else found the remark to be offensive and in remarkably poor taste. .
Speaking generally, (and not specifically about DJL), it is a sign of maturity as well as class to be able to gracefully apologize when one causes offense. Among other things, it engenders respect from the community. The irony is that the immature individual is typically so insecure that they can't bring themselves to publicly admit they are wrong because they feel they will lose face in the process. When one learns the lesson that admission of fallibility actually increases respect, then one has gone a long way towards growing up.
Speaking to DJL, whether you think your statement was appropriate or not is no longer the issue. But it is not too late to show some grace and class. The choice is yours. But I would point out that using someone's death to promote one's own personal agendas is generally considered pretty low. Even if that was not your intention, you're smart enough to know that given your history your words would be naturally interpreted that way. So if you had any respect for Stephen Paul, which you've never given any indication that you do, you could have restrained yourself, or at the very least, waited until the body was cold.
