Crafting your own instrument

I'm interested in crafting an Electric Bass for myself. Being inexperienced, however, I'd like to know what wood I should use for the neck. Otherwise, if you could recommend any books on the subject, it would be greatly appreciated. (I'm looking to make a neck-through, as opposed to a bolt-on)

And to answer your question, you will be MUCH happier if you make your necks out of mahogany. Carving maple sucks.
