Thanks for the indepth low down Reel.
Good all around info there.

I'm wondering if it isn't in fact the Dbx unit weirding out...
I'll have to completly bypass that in the morning and see what happens.

I've tested the Return so I feel I can rule that out... I'll track it down if it's the last thing I do!!
(Or the first thing I do. LOL)

:)

That's a shame Ghost, BUT having 16 tracks kind of makes up for it no?

I'm all about the remote too.

:)

Well, most of the time when I am recording, my friend Doug is over at the house so, we can split off the duties of hitting the play and record buttons on the remote for when either one of us is in the live room and the other in the control room but, for when I am working alone, it's a little tough to be playing my guitar and trying to Punch in and then out to fix up a solo or something like that.

But, yes. 16 tracks is a nice thing to have available, (when they are all working! ) One channel right now needs to be calibrated and one or two others disappear on me now and then.

I have to get my technician Patrick over to the house to fix it all up but, I am saving up for his visit as he is not cheap! Finding a technician who knows the machine and makes house calls is also like finding a needle in a haystack so, when he does come over, I gladly pay him what ever he needs to charge me.

The last time he was here, it cost me 400 bucks to change one transistor!! He had to tear the machine apart to find it and then put it all back together though.

I shutter to think what the next visit will cost me!?

Cheers! :)

Not having to wait and speculate if it'll be done right.... Priceless.

Ah Ha! I found the sinner cable!!
(It was half of a double RCA... A deceptivly brand new one!)

Now I can finish the first tune I'll kind of be happy with and finally work on mixing down!!

:)

Yeah, there's nothing like a tech that makes house calls!

Anyway, faults like this can be anywhere in the signal chain, and hopefully you'll find it to be something simple, because that audio card deal is a pain in the ass!;)

Man, am I ever glad to have found that bullshit cable!
(Reel I'm glad you stressed extensive cable checking before going any further.)

I've thought out a silly way to burn CD's without the PC near my set up having a burner! I guess I can get one of those "Nowhere" accounts and mix down to one PC, upload it to the site, then go in the other room and down load it onto the PC with the burner! LOL

I now officially have that post mixdown glow!
(Damn Vocals are HARD! I'm not completly happy with them, but they'll do I guess... A Condenser Mic AND a Tube Pre now go on the wish list!)

:)

You dont need no stinkin tube preamp Billy:D

Sounds like every thing is starting to take shape there in your studio Billy. I would like to hear some of your stuff to see if I could help you out on the drums sometime.
Shipping a tape from there to here cant cost much.

Lets Jam!

A cable, huh? That's good!

If you have two PC's, by chance to you have them networked?

You could pull wav files over the network, in house, if you have a basic network, from PC to PC.

You will most often mix down to wav files, then you'll have to convert to mp3's to upload to NowhereRadio. If you're only after a copy of the mp3, then you can just pull the mp3 down off the web again, after uploading it, from the web onto another computer.

If you really want cd quality, you must transport the wav file, itself, since that's what's used to make basic audio-cd format cd's.

A cd burner is recommended on the primary PC, to get the mixed down wav files off the hard disc, onto an audio cd that will play in almost every player.

That idea about transporting mp3's is an imperfect solution, unless all you really want is to transport the mp3 files around.

You'll still need a storage device, network connection, or cd drive in the primary mixdown computer, to make cd-audio standard cd's. You must locate the mixdown wav files onto the PC that has the cdr burner.;)

If the mixdown computer is a pc, it would probably be easiest to just buy a new cd burner. If you watch best buy, you can sometimes pick one up for $15 or less (after rebates, ). I picked one up last year, the day after christmas for $10.

Yeah, I REALLY want a stand-alone burner or I COULD just install one into my music PC and eventually something WILL take place to that effect, but you know, I just being whacky LOL

I'll likely just do an mp3 intended mixdown and upload it to a 'Nowhere' account just to fool around.
(Right now I just have a cassette mixdown, so I can bring my Cassette deck into the room with the CD burner.)

Woo Hoo! PM me you address Herm!

:)

Posting stuff to the web gives you instant worldwide visibility, for sure.

Cassettes were the standard mixdown medium for most home recordists, until a few years ago. The CD or CDr has become the standard playback medium, hasn't it?

I mean, of all the kids running around with a Walkman-style player, how many would you say are a CD Walkman vs how many are cassette? I almost universally see and use CD walkman-type players, and almost never cassette any more.

More cars are equipped with cd players nowadays, although a fair number of cars still sport cassette.

For home use, cassettes are still okay, and sound pretty good, but I wouldn't necessarily dub a CDr from a cassette, if another method was available.

If the cassette was the only dub source I had,... like archive tapes, then sure, I'd dub a CDr from it, if I had the notion. I have done that, for that "one of a kind" cassette mixdown archive tape, f/i, when I layed a live bass part to a 4-track mixdown, adding a fifth part during the mixdown-to-cassette process, to tape. ;)

The best solution may be the internal PC cdr burner. You could then lay out numerous playlists on the 'puter, and burn them directly from the wav file to the audio cdr. The second best might be a standalone CDr burner, but I think this tends to waste more media, by tending to create one-song discs more often, [an operational convenience issue]. Cassette deck mixdown in the home is still a useable and fun solution.;)

Billy could you tell me the size and operating system of the computer that does not have the cd burner in it

Yeah I hear ya Reel... I've mixed down directly to CD before, but now (Today) I have/ had the choice to either move my setup over to the other PC or bring the PC to my setup... I just dashed off a quick Cassette to CD dub (Which is of course far less than stellar... I had to even make a 1/8 Stereo to 1/8 cable!) LOL

I'll probably just get an internal burner for in here, but I want a stand alone ultimatly you know? But I need monitors and other stuff first and foremost... All in good time right?

Herm I don't really know about my other PC... It's small and not very powerful at all... In fact, I honestly can't say I know about ANY of my computers! LOL

:)

Well how is everyone doing and what is everyone working on???

Today I'm going to get my mixdown PC into the system so I can make mp3's, then well, I don't know... I kind of have the makings of a new tune circling my awareness, so maybe I'll try to bring some of it in for a landing. ( Alot of times when I sorta have the musical part decided upon, I'll work it into my head and just mumble along for a few days till the vowel sounds of lyrics start to break through... Pretty scientific huh? LOL )
I guess I'll dip into the song book if I can't get this new one reeled in.

So like I said how and what are you guys doing??

:)

So like I said how and what are you guys doing??

I am planning on starting a solo project this coming Sunday of an older tune I wrote a few years back. I have attempted to record this song no less then three times in the past and while each version has gotten progressively better, I am still not satisfied that I have captured the full intent of what was in my head when I wrote it.

I might also take a stab at a different song that arrived via parcel post.;)

Other then that, working six days a week is pretty time consuming and eats into my time to do more then the occasional track on Sundays; my one day off.:(

I am glad to see that you, (Billy), are progressing along and having fun along the way!

Perhaps soon, we will see a link to a website where we can hear your current stuff on the new set-up? I will look forward to that!:)

Cheers! :)

Soon I hope.....Soon.

I have a few songs that I've tried to get a handel on more than once trying to get it "Right".... They can keep you up at night.

Thank Goodness for coffee!

Did you get the strings done on your last Clinic tune?

Man I hope Reel isn't in Southern Cali with these wild fires on the go!!

...Reel????

I'm unemployed, & working on going to bed before 3am and getting up before noon.

12:25pm? Good morning! Having my first cup of coffee for the day.

I've been working a lot on my front yard, digging out all the dead turf & planting another lawn from scratch.

Prior to Jun-2002, I had trees & grass, although the weeds had really taken over 80% of the lawn.

After Jun-2002, we got all our trees removed from the property, which was needed because most of them were diseased. One tree was too close to the house, and had been grinding away the corner of my roof. The tree removal job wiped out the sprinkler system, so from this time on, the feeble weed infested lawn died, outright.

Come spring -2003, the rains had come, and although the lawn never came back, the weeds came back in force.

By July-2003, due to negligence, the weeds had reached about 4'-5' tall, and the yard was a real disaster and eyesore, much worse than before.

Since July-2003, I've been working a lot on the yard, digging out all the old turf, dead grass and weeds. I was making fairly good progress, considering, when by Oct-6th-2003, someone on the street had called the city and got me in trouble with the city "code enforcement" for the undone state of my yard.

In Palmdale, we have a city ordinance that dictates you must have a normal lawn or landscaping. Dirt & weeds are not gonna cut it, in Palmdale, and the city let me know that. The code enforcement gentleman told me I must have a normal lawn, or landscaped as such, by Nov-3rd-2003, which by the time I got the notice, left me only about 2 weeks to finish up the whole front yard,... after I had already been working on it for months.

Anyway, if you've followed this sob story, you'd be right in assuming that I've spent the last week or so working almost full time on the front yard. I successfully dug out everything except the flower box area, which will get done later, and I've successfully turned bare sand into a rich loamy topsoil, with seed and everything, at the expense of about $275 for mulch, topsoil, seed and fertilizer. After much labor, all is good, and almost there!

My latest bitch, is that I'm almost done, stuff is raked nice and flat & even, and THEN the east half of the sprinklers don't want to turn on all the way on auto, so this morning a dribbling of water just created much runoff and messup of the even topsoil job I just finished. Gotta touch that up now.

I can't determine why the east half of the sprinklers are not firing off 100%, but that's my job to find out today.

Also, to just finalize, I have a bit more top cover, a rake, some extra seed for touch-up and some fertilizer I need to apply, before ROLLING it all flat, and returning the roller before 5pm today.

That's the latest bitch, sob story, or whatever. That's what I've been doing most of the last two weeks, and before.

HOW'S RECORDING? Well, I did a few scratch recordings of my guitar plinking around [practice], from the 488mkII to 4-tracks on cassette. It was a scratch run, trial recording, and it sounded as such. I still haven't listened back to it yet.

Which brings me back to a statement I made about two weeks ago, that I,... and we all,... need to practice our craft, from musicianship to proper recording technique, otherwise it's all just tea time chat, and doesn't add up to much.

I've been thinking that my random guitar musings, that I practice on, sound pretty smooth, and almost worthy of putting to tape, just as an experiment. Well, however true that is or not, when I finally set up a recorder and pressed "record", then I choked and all the smoothness went out of my playing immediately.

That's funny, but I just use this little anectdote to remind myself and others, that we need to practice our musicianship and also our recording, engineering and producing skills. Even I do, and I consider myself a 'long time user' of this equipment, but there's no magic that comes right out of the box with the recorder or guitar,... as many a Newbie has discovered himself.

All the rules and laws of physics apply to everyone, even the experienced home recordist, so even those of us who are more experienced need practice.

Well, back to the final stages of lawn rework. Gotta rake the stuff that washed away, smooth it all out again, finally apply some chemical fertilizer, and then ROLL. I gotta return the roller, hopefully before 5pm, otherwise incur another day's charge on the rental, $12. Also, I gotta determine why half my sprinklers are not firing off correctly, but I think it might be the automatic solenoid in the valve. TBD.

Be back later, Dave. [BBL]

PS: I finally got the "wayward" M520- mixer delivered, yesterday! That's the good news, and that it also came with PS-520 power supply unit.

The bad news, is that it shipped without the 20-pin power cable that goes between the supply and the board. SO, I don't feel ripped off, outright, but it's been a very difficult and disappointing M520 deal, and I have it out of the box, and it won't work without the cable!

I emailed the seller to see if he can recover the cable, otherwise I'll try Tascam parts, and as a last resort, will have to fabricate a cable myself, but I REALLY don't want to go there!

Also, the M520 is missing ALL of the ACCESS-SND>RCV jumper plugs, plus one missing off one Pgm Buss! DAMN, that's 21 jumpers missing,... NOT a minor concern, when Tascam charges $5 for each jumper!! DAMN- EBAY SELLERS!! Damn them!

I'd like the seller to find the 20p power cable and send it to me, but the jumpers I'll get from Tascam myself, if still available.

The M520 mixer listed as normal, and although it did not say explicitly that this mixer was tested & in working order, it also did not say specifically that anything important was missing,... except wood side panels are missing, and that was in the listing,... but I'm pretty much dead in the water on the M520, without that special 20 pin power cable,... until further notice!

Seeing that this M520 auction closed Sep-02-03, I am happy to have the bulk of the mixer delivered here by Oct-24-03, but I'll need that power cable, before I get any real usage out of it.

Previously, I had all but given up, and assumed I had been scammed out of the entire purchase,... but the bulk of the mixer finally shipped,... less cable!

BTW, that M520 is HUGE, and weighs a TON,... about 125lbs board by itself, boxed, and the PS unit is relatively light, but damn, that's a helluva large mixer to ship! It came special freight on "Bestways Freightline" shipping,... not USPS, UPS or Fedex,... was too big!!!

What I can say that's positive, is that the main M520 board was boxed very well, with cardboard cut to form, and the outer box material was layed TRIPLE-THICKNESS, so I can't fault the guy on the mixer packing job, and it made it through shipping without incurring a scratch.

Something else, that most of you guys can only imagine, but M520 mixer is a VERY IMPRESSIVE ALL-PRO mixing BOARD. I can't wait to recover the power cable and get it up and running!

The M520 saga continues....

Glad to hear you finally got your 520 (You'll find that cable somehow... If anyone can it's you.)

:)

Welcome to Dave's: As the Trimpot Turns!

2:00pm, just got my second cup of coffee! I'll migrate to the yardwork, right after this! TBD! I swear!;)

Reel sorry about the m520 problems but maybe it will work out oK.

Now let me tell you all about my Ebay 38 sale.
After waiting for 2 full weeks after payment and some bitching i get my 38, two dx4d,s and patch bay and sync unit.

The dumb bastard that packed it put it all in one box with nothing but some cardboard in a few places to protect things.
THe head over is broke, the back cover is broke the side plastic on the meters is broke the face plate for the meters is pushed out cause the unit was droped so hard it bent the face plate into a u shape the feet have pushed the bottom up and bent it.
Not to mention the pinch roller is like black tar, If you touch it it just leaves black shit on your fingers
This was not so much a ups problem as it was a packaging problem. Any bets as to what i will end up with in the end of all this?
