OK, so I have a good idea.
Take a look at this page:

Public Domain Christmas Songs

I think it'd be nice to provide some Christmas music to the masses, without the hassle of licensing. So, pick a song from that list, all those songs are in the public domain, and do an original arrangement and recording of one of the songs! We'll have sort of an MP3 Clinic "Virtual Christmas Album"!
Here's my contribution:
Silent Night, Holy Night

Your post is incorrect...

To accomodate everyone the use of the word "christmas" is now restricted...

Please refrain from using the word and/or substitute it with the word "holiday"...

We wish you a happy holiday...
We wish you a happy holiday...

and a festive New Year...

Great idea.

This was recorded and mixed in 24 hours last year after a party, the story is pasted below for those who are interested. We ended up on TV, local radio and even in the National press. Spur of the moment, it features most of the local boozers from a pub I used to live next door to singing various lines from the Band Aid track "Do They Know Its Christmas". It was hillarious to do and we even did a follow up "Perfect Day" (which I have to say is far better considering the time I had second time around). We ended up raising over £1000 for charity, and some kind soul even paid over £100 for a signed copy on ebay!! :D

The resulting track is

the old webby is still up too, though not updated. www.barnesaid.com

The Story:

"This whole idea came about during a Party at (my friends) Dave Barrett and Caroline Wilson's house.

Dave and I decided it would be a fine idea to issue everyone with a line from “Do They Know Its Christmas” for a bit of a sing song! This ended up being a laugh and it dawned on us that it would be brilliant to record and we decided to begin the next day. Welshy Davy Baaa (he's from Wales) then suggested everyone coughing up a tenner for the privilege and donating the proceeds to charity. This was agreed, lines were picked and it became apparent that more than one of us wanted the Bono line. To solve the ensuing conflict, the Welsh one suggested an Auction. This was held and the line went for a stunning forty quid!! (er .. to Me!)

The next day we all went our separate ways and I commenced work on the backing track. By 3pm we were ready for the first vocal. Welsh Dave was first up and during the course of the afternoon we had numerous locals crooning away like the stars they are. Over the next couple of days, everyone managed to get in to do their part and by Wednesday the song was ready for its first airing, in the pub obviously.
By Friday, though a little late for the Christmas number one, we had permission from the Band Aid trust to sell the CD and duplication commenced. Everyone has done their part from printing to trimming to CD duplication to accounting and generally spreading the good word. Best of all we’ve all really enjoyed doing it and are incredibly proud of the result."

Cheers

Inspiring! Lovely arrangement.

Thank you! Some folks balk at some of the changes, especially the one melodic change; made to accommodate the chord path, but I really like it. I had fun trying to get the fretltss bass intonation right on the melody...

You aren't even allowed to say New Year anymore; it's potentially age-discriminatory. You must now substitiute "Recurring Solar Elliptic Anniversary"... It's a bitch to get that to work in a lyric.. :)

I can't listen at work, but I'll check out your other Christmas tunes later at home!!! (Yeah, I got the short straw on working...)

I love the arrangement, goes just where you dont think it will. Mint. Im really sorry but I laughed at one point concerning the fretless. Brought me back to playing a 5 string I'd "invested" in for a cover band many moons ago. Jesus those things are a nightmare, when ur used to a fretted instrument. I bet u spent ages!!

Thanks! And no worries on laughing at the fretless, mate... Humor comes from the heart, and isn't funny unless there's a grain of truth in it. Yeah, it took a long time to even get it that close; not only am I used to fretted, but the fretless has a shorter scale than my fretted, so it was like learning a totally new instrument! And I cloaked it in a stereo chorus for good measure! :D ;)

Hey Phil, jog my memory....

Who done the cover of The Kinks' Father Christmas? Was it Stan Arthur? That was a great cover!

Boy, ya gotta love this... I'm so glad you raised so much cash.. It's always cool whipping a project together so quickly for such a great cause. All thigns considered, I don't think you could have asked for or done anything better than this. Such joy... Thank you for doing that!!!

2nd trip, eh? Well, that's a terrific job! Has a Neil Diamond "Solitary Man" vibe happening at first, (Back when Neil was cool as they came) but the vox are smooth and genteel, a little more eerie and ethereal.. Well done!!!!

I still have that TSO track going round and round and rou .... BAH!!

honestly it was such a laugh doing the Barnes Aid thing, and for all its (glaring) faults, we couldnt have hoped for a better response. I know its not really in keeping with the thread start, but I couldnt help myself! hehe.

Thanks Llarion, for your kind and indeed inspiring comments. "Thanks", though much appreciated, are certainly unnecessary. ;)

Cheers
