into computer. My friend wants to record with 1 mic into the computer. What is the best way. Needs to be simple. Going to sonar in pc.

I've know people to use a standard computer mic
And record through the onboard soundcard's mic input...
Surely is cheap.

Cheapest- SB and crap mic that came with computer for online chatting. Cost? Probably nothing since the computer already has this.
Best- High-end soundcard with professional mic pre, take your pick of top-quality microphones and off you go. Cost? $300.00 to ???? This is still pretty simple, it will just cost a lot more. (Oh, and it'll sound good too!)

let me be more clear
I have a full blown set up. When I say best I mean simplest for a beginer to warm up to. I have alesis hd 24/96 and motu 2408mkIII. tHAT IS HOW i GET TRACKS INTO COMPUTER. hE JUST WANTS TO TAKE A MIC,RECORD A TRACK INTO COMPUTER,say into sonar,then add another track after etc. I dont know the best way for him to approach this. Im at the other end of recording and dont know anything about a simplistic setup. He want to record 1 track at a time. Jim

Go with a small mixer like the Behringer UB802. It has 2 mic preamps with phantom power 2 stereo channels and a headphone out. Plug it into his existing soundcard and he is good to go.

Ocnor's method will work, but how good it will sound is going to be dependent on the converters in the soundcard not to mention likely latency problems if he is going to attempt to overdub multiple tracks as you indicate.
If decent quality is part of the equation, then he will need a good soundcard for starters. There are plenty of choices on the market. If he's only going to be recording one thing at a time then a simple card with 2 inputs will serve just fine. There are choices from M-Audio starting well under $200.00. A 2 input card coupled with a small mixer such as Ocnor suggested will get him going. Total cost (sans mic), around $250.00.
