ok..so as far as recordings that i enjoy, here goes, i hope this helps:
grandaddy, flaming lips, belle and sebastian, elliott smith, pinback, mojave 3.

A man after my own heart!! B and S have to be my favorite band right now. I'll have to check your stuff out.

Hmmm...

"Warm" and "bright" tend not to go together, whereas "warm"
and "clarity" can IMHO.

The SM57 is a good vocal microphone, and can sound terrific on some singers-even with so-so pre's.
Elliot used them for his vocals BTW.

They are very tweakable via EQing (during mixing) to get a high quality vocal recording from almost any singer.
May not be "best" on a given voice, just very good or better.

Try that SM57 by pointing it sideways towards the singer's mouth
to soften its sound. Works for me! :)

Come to think of it sell the AT also...

the elliot smith sound is all about the sm57. i think on a few records the sm57 is the ONLY mic he used. voice AND guitar.

the flaming lips have a whole variety of acoustic guitar sounds... so hard to tell.

i would say, get an sm57 and a hypey condenser like a 603 and mix and match.
