Mixing and Mastering.
Hi,
I am making radio edits of my mixes by taking out any words that are not really aloud on radio before the watershed.
Does anyeon know where I could find a list of these banned words atall?
Im in the UK, so UK laws might be different from the rest of the world.

Ive been googling for ages and couldnt find anything. :(

There is no list of banned words - the FCC bases it's judgment on context alone.

This is true. Clearchannel in Detroit after 10:00PM is like watching HBO. Almost anything goes, even an occasional F-bomb.

You might look here to find them :D
Cheers.
I found:
Shit, Piss, Fuck, ****, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits.

One of our songs has whore in the vocals alot of the way through, so would that be ok?

i think it depends the context, ie how well you can hear the words.

i know of quite a few songs that have got major airplay with no censorship simply because you can't hear the offending word..

I GOTTA wonder what " **** " is if you feel it's OK to print the others.

Golly.

you do know that's a comedy bit from the '70s, right? :D

It was a rather popular one as I remember, I think I was in junior high when it came out.

Alhough, in the US, it still probably isn't too far from the truth as far as broadcast television is concerned............

Nice.
Ive been thinking about that recently actually. One of the words Im worried about is "whore" but it doesnt sound like whore when its sung. Its intentionally slurred to sound better in the song.

lol, I noticed that Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits are alll alowed on this site, but for some weird reason C(*)unt isnt!!
Madness. So I suppose dick or lad or willy or boaby or penis wont be alowed then?

This is extremely vague, and used to be quite a controversial topic at my school's radio station. In the US, at least, there are certain hours where "indecent" language and "obscene" language are not permitted, and then at night (past 10pm, but before 6am) only "obscene" language is not permitted. The difference? Who knows.

The FCC defines indecent language as "language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community broadcast standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities."

According to the FCC, language is obscene if: an average person finds the material as a whole appealing to prurient interest; it depicts, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct defined by applicable law; it lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

Obscene language is not protected by the 1st amendment, and it is illegal to broadcast it over public radio waves. Indecent language is protected by the 1st amendment, so the FCC cannot ban it entirely. However, they are allowed to restrict it.

All in all, it is extremely vague as to what constitutes what type of language, and it definitely must be observed in context. This is all US law, so I'm not sure what the restrictions are in the UK, but I presume they are similar.

That Alice in Chains song "Man In the Box" was played for a long time down here without censorship, then one day I heard "Shoooove my noooose in shfpfzpssay!" Someone must've looked up the lyrics or something...

Keep "whore" out if you are saying something like, "Im going to kill that whore." or "That whore gave me an STD." You should be good with it otherwise.

There is a song that plays on the pop radio here in town with a line that says, "what a shame the poor groom's bride is a whore." Whore is censored before 10 pm but it flies after that.

I heard "spit" instead of shit. Doesnt make sense for a "dog who gets beat". I didnt know dogs spit.

Yeah, I dunno. The one I heard kinda sounded like they may have tried to paste some sounds together to say "spit" but I don't think it was an official overdub by Layne or anything.

I used to hear White Zombies "More Human than Human" uncensored for a while.
It was,.....kinda funny to hear "fucker" a few times in one song on the radio.
Then,...... they caught on....................
