carpet rolls as bass absorbers

At a basic level... will standing thick rolls of carpet in each corner of my tiny (7'x9') control room reduce some of the bass frequencies???

I appreciate that the frequencies reduced would be impossible to predict but the whole lower end is booming all over the place.

I currently have 2m x 1m 3"thick acoustic panel on the rear wall and loads of duvets jammed under the desk (away from cables) which has helped the room dramatically but would the carpet rolls help???

ok you can get stuck in and slap me down now for even thinking it!

Bob,

The problem with questions like this is there's only one way to know if a proposed material absorbs bass well: You take at least eight of them to a lab and pay $1,000 to find out. I haven't done that. Would you like to?

Seriously, your only other option is to try it and either listen for an improvement, or use ETF or a similar room analysis program and measure the change in LF response and modal ringing.

I actually tried this :o , being as I had enough like-new carpet laying around to re-carpet my house twice. I couldn't tell a difference with/without it.

4 inches of Rigid fiberglass in each corner does make a noticable difference.

*edit* the rolls extended from floor to ceiling, and consisted of approximately 15 ft. of burbur (sp?) rolls (rolled up they were approx 1 ft. wide).
The moral of the story (FWIW as interpreted by me) is to leave carpet on the floor... if even there!

A 7X9 room is pretty small to crank up the bass very much, why not try lower volume? My recording room is 13X26 with 10 ft celings and bass still gets pretty boomy, even with carpet on the floor, heavy drapes on 3 walls and bass traps in the corners.

I do keep the level down. It feels so small in there that if I did crank it up I'd be concerned about having a 'scanners' type reaction! Looks like I'll skip the carpet idea though.

Just trying to even it out. Did have a fantastic room, ideal for monitoring... huge with high ceilings... but family augmentation has forced me out of there!

Now trying to make the best of a small deal.

It's not the size that counts... it's the bass absorbtion! ;)
